They're promoting formula milk over breastfeeding by exploiting the medical ignorance of the mothers. It's not just about the fear of AIDS: they literally tell the mothers that their milk isn't good enough. But as you know, clean water is scarce and the result is that millions of infants die from diarrhea because of badly sterilised bottles and water. But they carry on... regardless...

That's the level of cynicism food companies operate upon.

I'm sure I heard on the news last week that alongside the other factors others have mentioned here already, much of the problem is the result of increasing desertification removing arable land from use.

Desertification is definitely a factor in many places.  I also heard on the news that a major source of famine in southern Africa comes from one man..Mugabe.  Zimbabwe used to be called the breadbasket of Africa.  But Mugabe's seizure of farmland from white farmers has caused a catastrophe.  Mugabe claiming he was righting past racial injustices gave this farmland to his buddies.  Surprise, surprise...his pals didn't have the slightest idea how to run a modern farming operation.  I often wonder if Africa would have all the problems it does if Zimbabwe was still called Rhodesia.

....what responsibility to we, the world community, have towards those affected by the rise in world food prices?

We only have a responsibility I feel to help those who take on responsibility themselves to change their situation for the better and bring about lasting changes.

We need to change our way of thinking fast. We need to stop farting about with the party politics of left and right and face up to reality - we need both left AND right to work together - the Middle Path. We need responsible governments to work in partnerships with responsible people.

Responsible means planning a family if you want kids and not simply getting screwed, breeding, and expecting others such as the government to pick up the tab.

Responsible means doing something for other people and being part of society. Keeping people on welfare also isn't being responsible. Being on welfare in most Western countries in tantamount to house arrest. Giving people small amounts of money because they've got nothing to do isn't working.

We need to be tougher on our charities. A charity which claims to have 90% admin costs isn't a charity, it's a business profiting out of people's misfortune. Compare this with major corporations who invest more than 10% of their income into sporting and cultural activities of other people.

There is only one way forward, education, meaningful occupation and social inclusion.

The growth industries are care, support in the community, entertainment, culture, and education.

We need to be less money orientated, more people orientated.. We need to understand that making a profit isn't success, but enjoying a decent standard of life - it's quality of life.

I'm not talking about just Western society here, but worldwide, including Africa. Throwing money at the poor because we feel sorry for them isn't working. We need to do something, and they do too.

Plus, after the initial promotion formula is expensive. Many mothers can not feed enough formula, but when they realise that, the mothersmilk is already dried up.

Those are the reasons that I do not buy Nestle products.
