I love threads like this one, thank you.

We are certainly in a recession/depression, which we have been discussing for months
around here.

I would try to get out of us as much unsecured debt as possible, and small changes can save a lot of $$$.

Personally, I am placing an ad for a gasoline fetish slave to meet me at the gas station and fill my car up weekly, and for his trouble, I will give him a big smile and then give him a big kick in the ass.

~FR~  It hasn't really hit Me yet, but I am looking toward the fact that it could.  Groceries are going up...that is the main thing in My tight budget.  I have lived on less for so long that I don't have much to give up.  I have a paid off car that damn well better last Me for at least 2 more years, I do not get My nails done and eric is capable of giving Me a nice massage.  I have just made arrangements to move into a nicer place for less monthly rent (moving in June) but the rental market as well as the buying market is soft here and I make hay while the sun shines!
Gas is a biggie, but I drive so little that it adds up to maybe an extra $5 or $10 per month at this point.  I see people still planning expensive vacations and I wonder how they are doing it.  But I know retail sales are seriously down as it is affecting a relative's business, big time...
I have always been a savvy shopper/money manager, and it is paying off for Me now.  I do feel for the people who are sticking their heads in the sand and not making adjustments. Many of them don't even know how to begin to cut back on what they assumed was rightfully their neccessities but are really luxuries.
I too am of the belief that it is going to get much worse before it gets better.

We live full time in a motor home.  The price of diesel has effected our plans for this spring, fall, and perhaps next year.   Normally we stop in WA each spring and fall as we travel between MT and AZ.  This year we're driving straight to MT because diesel is over $4 a gallon.  That means i don't get to see my grown kids and grand UMs, he doesn't get to see his grown kids and grand UMs, and he won't be seeing his doctor for his twice a year visit.  We'll try to make it over to WA during the summer when we can combine our visiting with an event we want to attend and he'll finally get his necessary doctor visit.  We may drive the car and borrow a tent so we can attend the event, leaving the motor home in MT.  This fall we'll head straight south without the stop in WA and this may be the last time for the motor home to be driven south.  It may stay in AZ on a permanent basis while we change from full timers to living in the motor home only in the winter.

He's been full timing  for 17 years.  His parents did it before him.  It's like seeing the end of an era.  It'll hurt to only see the little ones once a year instead of twice as they change so fast.  Will they even remember us?  We can't even sell the motor home.  People just aren't buying them and i can't blame them.

NG:

Some women spend a lot on clothing and hair/makeup.  I tend to spend my money on my having my nails done.  It is a luxury for me.
One thing I am thinking about is cutting my Internet off.   I rarely use it thee days.  I would prefer cable rather than the internet.
That would be huge too.
We are watching what we purchase at the store for groceries.  Sometimes we eat lunch out because we have to get out sometimes. I have been thinking about going off line for a long time.  In the beginning it was new and exciting to meet others from around the world, but after my group closed, it doesn't intrest me that much.  Nails and internet could be it for me.
I do not drive distance driving anymore.

Regards, MissSCD

I am feeling the crunch, but I have a very pleasant way to keep my head above water. Fox will be moving in with me next semester to help with expenses for 4 months, since his classes are only 2 days a week and it would cost significantly more to live on campus than it will here. I cant say I dont like the idea, and itll free up half the rent and a bit of the other bills to boot

Temptation is the main reason for me to go off line.  I am seriously thinking, but it will be a last resort.
My hours are cut almost in half. Sales are down and we are a discount retail store.  I feel sorry for those in luxury retail.
I know I had a happy healthy productive life before all of this.
The sad thing is no one seems to be doing anything about it.  People are driving more than before.  Maybe it is just a small few of us that are taking this seriously.

Termyn8or -> RE: Signs of the Times! (4/28/2008 12:21:38 PM)

We saw these times coming. While our actions were not exactly perfect, they weren't all that bad. The trends were there and paying down as much secured debt as possible was the right thing to do.

Paid off houses and cars can make it work. Pay your taxes and insurance.

But you are still hit by groceries, gas and utilities. What is a bit unusual now is that basics are going up. For example rice. However filet mignon hasn't really gone up that much. Gasoline is through the roof, but we saw a case of decent motor oil for under a buck a quart after rebate. The price of eggs has outpaced others as well.

But in the end it is not a matter of what is going up in price, it is a matter of when. Every product you buy that requires eggs to produce will soon cost more. Any product requiring petroleum based fuel to transport to you will be going up in price, already has, and it's not done yet.

You know what really gets me is the so carefully planned and executed dumbing down of people that makes them unable to see the real problem. I stand in awe of "their" accomplishments in turning people into consumers. And a principal component of that was to make them stupid enough to not see the real problem.

And the real problem, do you really want to know ? Some do. It is simple. There are too many people. It is really that simple and this shift in exchange rates for these commodities is a clear indication if I ever saw one.

Twenty or thirty years ago we had these ZPG people, ZPG stands for zero population growth. They warned that if people continued to reproduce at the rate they were, we could expect more strife, high prices for everything and a shitload of people who can just barely make it. And some who can't.

Well take a look around.

T

I guess they well settle this one finally with which comes first, the chicken or the egg.  Must be the egg!

lol

We did see a lot of this happening except for the extreme weather which has contributed to the high price of basics going up.
