just because AT&T can't handle the broadband issues...doesn't mean the end of the internet will come..
servers (commercial or private) is what keeps the internet strong and the www booming

it would be like saying that Starbucks was going bankrupt would mean the end of overpriced coffee (this is not a flame to the OP, but to the reporters who originally wrote the stories)

Status: offline 		LOL, I guess AT&T doesn't want to be in the internet business if they can't cope with it. Does anyone here think Google,Microsoft,Yahoo,Ebay,Amazon,Apple, would just sit idly by and let the net choke, that would be a bigger financial disaster than a Bear Stearns meltdown, by far. It simply won't happen, and there is zero excuse for it to happen, I read an article a few weeks ago about dark fiber, which is fiber that is already buried, just not used, most of it is from the heady days of the dotcoms, that went crash. It's just laying there waiting to be hooked up. If necessary that can be tapped, more cable laid, AT&T isn't even necessary, and they shouldn't act like they are, they can be replaced. A Google is more important than AT&T in this day and age, it's about time they accept there diminished role in the world. Yeah, it'd take a few years to replace AT&T but it would happen, and if they aren't willing to expand their network, they aren't going to be "the leader", because someone else will.

Bury some more cable bitch(AT&T), or get the fuck out of the way.

Status: offline 		The cost of the internet will go up as people join exclusive work groups and share information with only people on those groups. That is how I see the future, which is just as bleak. The technology can be used to create segregation of the highway, thus fewer people have access to all information.

It may even turn into a national only system in places such as China where they already restrict the sites people can visit and doctor the search results.

Your portal to the internet is the search Engine so if it only returns results based on the locations you are permitted to visit, the situation will be handled.

Status: offline 		(AT&T) just rased there prices. with that note I am looking for a new isp. just so happens I can get rid of the phone and still have internet. we have wifi and cable. looks like I will be changing my service.

Yep.... I've never thought that the internet as we know it now would remain affordable and accesible forever.

(As if people will hold still for an end to the internet. We can have famine, war, death by invisible vampires ... but don't mess with our cable tv or the internet.) The sad thing is that we know what's coming ("We need to charge you more in order to develop better technology") when the economy is already horrible.

Status: offline 		Sadly AT&T is sort of correct.  They are not talking about what they provide to end users, so telling them that if they can't compete then get out of the way is really not the correct issue. Internet Service Providers such as DSL, Cable or Wireless simply provide bandwidth to the household or business.  Those providers have to connect to a Tier-1 provider to allow access to the actual content and services which are connected to other providers.  In other words your local cable company may provide you with service but they can only connect you directly to your next door neighbor not to Google or CollarMe.

The problem is that the local providers don't want to pay for the extra bandwidth they need to give their customers the promised connectivity.  They sell you a specific speed to your house but that is all they promise, not that speed all the way across the internet.  For example they bought a fixed bandwidth to the internet that satisfied the original needs of their customers.  As those same customers started using video and voice which takes up much more of the available bandwidth the ISPs didn't expand their connection to the internet to keep up with the expanded usage.  The result is slower usage for all of their customers.  So the problem isn't the Tier 1 providers, it's our local ISPs.  If they don't expand their outward connections then the internet won't be usable.  In today's "all that matters is this quarter's profits" mentality they aren't willing to cut quarterly profits to insure the future of their customer base.
