with all the different sports teams that are out there ...why we have never heard of one of their charter planes...crash?

you would think you would hear something about this considering all the games that get played and all the teams that have to travel.

some of these teams travel great distances...and can not take the bus to do that since the game is usually the next night.  think of it..162 baseball games per year with 30 teams.  82 hockey games with 30 teams.  16 football games...etc etc...

surely one would crash every now and then no? i mean you hear about normal planes crashing all the time...but never of any sports team.

what would happen suddenly if the yankees team was flying to california and crashed...completely destroyed... can you imagine the impact that would be on the world? (okay...just usa/canada)... one day something like this is going to happen.  certainly with all those terrorists out there...one would think to do this?

I can only hope that the sonics plane crashes, along with the coach on the way to oklahoma.

But we get to keep the name in seattle-which is the best part of the whole deal!  It's been HOW many years since they were in the playoffs?

Welcome to real life.

That movie was based on the story of the 1970 Marshall University football team; of which thirty-seven players and all but one member of their coaching staff were killed when their plane crashed on final approach to Huntington Airport.

ok..fine..that was nearly 40 years ago...so it hasnt happened since...and not to a major league team... (NHL-NBA-NFL-MLB or MLS)  which would have a much more serious impact on the world with not only people but economy and sports in general.

i have never heard of that team and never saw the film.

Willow, you might be having one of those moments.

I will draw an analogy here, and then explain it. A buddy of mine kept on commenting on how much the number 13 came up in his life. I almost had to beat it out of him, but what I said was "You see it because it is what you are looking for, take the next week or two and watch for the number twelve".

The point is that one must make their own judgement not only as to truth and the faith placed in such numbers, but to their revelance as well.

That may have not been the best analogy, but this is still the point.

If you go looking for rock stars and celebrities, of which pro sport players are, you will find very few incidents where they are killed in an aircraft, indeed. But when you compare that to the overall death rate of people who fly, the numbers do not differ all that much.

It is true what they say, in the context of having a crash or injury or death, that traveling by plane is safer than traveling by automobile, at least down here in the states.

Consider in 59 when five or six great pioneers of rock and roll were lost. When Buddy Holly and The Big Bopper and a few others died in a plane crash. There were also a few others on that plane.

Then the Marshall team. Count them all up and then think of it this way, how many other people, not celebs in any way shape or form. Not politicians even, just regular folk. How many of them died ? Not many, and that is my point. What percentageof the population died as a result of a plane crash, then what percentage of regular people do ? Barring a hijacking or a terrorist act very few. It happens, but when you are looking for something, sometimes you find.

But if you care to argue, realistically, pro sports people, politicians and celebs do travel more than your usual Joe, or Jane. If you think the numbers are skewed you might have to crunch them. I doubt figures exist anywhere to lend support to your claim, and I also doubt they exist to discredit it.

Actually it could be true for less sinister reasons, that the elite have the money to choose their airlines. If they can pay 700 for a ticket while the rest of us take another flight for 300, well that could explain a few things.

And when it gets back to money I tend to think I am on the right track.

I'll slip the grain of salt under the door.

T

You hear about crashes because they get publicity, but they're extremely rare. See the Bureau of Transportation Statistics' data. Fear of flying is way out of proportion to the risk.

Take baseball: Say the road games are split into 30 away series, each requiring a round trip flight (probably an overestimate as they tend to get strung together in road trips). In 2006 (the last year data is available for) there were 2 fatal US crashes in 11.41 million flights. 60 flights * 30 teams = 1800 flights/season. So, using 2006's accident rate, you would expect a crash every now and then... if by "now and then" you mean every 6300 years.

While a crash would be a tragic event, I'm not sure how much of an effect it would really have. It could mess up the season's schedule pretty badly... but could probably be dealt with. The teams are insured, so it would be unlikely to completely sink them financially. In the longer run, most sports have dealt with expansion teams at one point or another. The talent dilution from an accident really wouldn't be much different, and could be handled in a similar way.
