I just found out today that my late Great Uncle was in the KKK.  Where does that put my late grandfather I am wondering?  I am sure he was involved because he hated the civil rights movemement.
The entire family of my great uncle, my cousins, are very prejudice vicious people.  Now I know why.  I am so embarrased by it all.
The uncle has been dead for almost ten years along with my grandfather.  My grandfather was a wonderful person as long as things went his way.
Head is still spinning.

Regards, MissSCD

Why worry about it, you can choose your friends, you can't choose your family. There are guranteed to be skeletons in every family somewhere in your ancestory. I did my family tree a few years back & I found some direct ancestors were hung for sheep rustling. So do I now avoid large parts of rural Wales. It's best to just pretend they don't exist.

There were also slave owners who were actually kind to their slaves...Doesn't alter the fact that they were willing participants in a corrupt, economic system that devalued all African American human life and owned people contrary to their will just because they could.

Just offering a reality check.

MNN

P.S. I don't think the OP is saying she feels responsible for the behavior of her family members...I think she's simply expressing her justified feelings of shock, disappointment and maybe even embarrassment. But I didn't hear her say she felt responsible for their bad choices.

I'd hate for anyone here to actually learn something.  However the history channel did a spot on the KKK..a few years back.  Here is a link with much info on the KKK...including some of the negro klan members.

http://www.kkklan.com/

Learn something?   Like the 'Dread' Scott decision, instead of addressing rights issues such as citizenship for those of African descent, actually ruled that blacks were in fact animals?

Or that Jefferson wanted the 3/5 clause in the constitution because he knew blacks were worth less than whites, instead of the more commonly held notion that he did it to keep slave owners from controlling the voting by using their slaves votes in proxy?

Or were you referring to the 'UFOs are real' section of that website?

you shouldn't be too ashamed of an ancestor that did his best to ensure the power is kept in the hands of his decendants. if that's the case, you could add columbus, alexander the greek, cortez, the colonists, the pope, rhodes to the list of shameful ancestors. be proud. if it weren't for your uncle, you wouldn't have the lifestyle you enjoy so much.
