Level -> Pacino & De Niro: embarrasing themselves? (4/23/2008 5:36:58 PM)

I've thought this for awhile now. [:)]

quote:

I thought Francis Ford Coppola was being cranky last fall when he badmouthed Al Pacino and Robert De Niro -- the stars of Coppola's immortal "Godfather" films -- for taking parts for the money and losing their passion for doing great work. "I met both Pacino and De Niro when they were really on the come," Coppola told GQ magazine. "Now Pacino is very rich, maybe because he never spends any money; he just puts it in his mattress. . . . They all live off the fat of the land."

Coppola was right on the money. The two icons of '70s New Hollywood, heroes to a generation of young actors and filmmakers, have become parodies of themselves, making payday movies and turning in performances that are hollow echoes of the electrically charged work they did in such films as "Serpico," "Dog Day Afternoon," "Mean Streets" and "Taxi Driver."

Here's the correct link here.

You blew my mind...... I was wondering "how in the hell did she know I was reading that story???" [:D]

Ha! I thought it was a test to see if we were actually reading the story.

No, just a case of me almost falling asleep at the keyboard. Thanks for the heads up, bethnai. [;)]

Ok, now that I have read it, I agree. And that is a problem that has plagued the history of movie making, matching an aging actor with a rediculously younger female.  Too, matching an aging actor with a billy bad ass character. Sean Connery did one of those movies.

On the other hand, good movies are hard to come by. Good characters are hard to find.  I am not a Coppola fan. I own the Godfather set, I admit. But, I think that he is one of those directors that feeds the mainstream and pretty much set the criteria for crap, therefore, he can't really cry too much when it doesn't work out in the end. I am just not a fan of his at all.

I'd wager their newest movie, another pair-up movie called Righteous Kill is going to be faaaaar from an embarrassment. If they want to do a few light-hearted comedies and parodies for each "Heat" or "Righteous Kill" they do....I'm ok with that. They don't need to establish their acting chops. They are legends who are enjoying themselves as they get older. More power to them.

Me... I recon any thing they are in, is better for it.

Just me.

slaveboyforyou -> RE: Pacino & De Niro: embarrasing themselves? (4/23/2008 8:19:22 PM)

Shhh, don't tell anybody......I think the Godfather movies sucked.  They were beyond boring.  I can't sit through one of them now.  Yeah I know, I am not cool....sue me.  Fuck Francis Ford Coppola.  I like some of those movies he is criticizing.  He and some people like him think all movies are supposed to make you think.  Well sometimes, I just like to escape when I shell out my 8 bucks.

Bethnai -> RE: Pacino & De Niro: embarrasing themselves? (4/23/2008 10:02:44 PM)

I didn't think they were cool at first.  It took me a bit. I really and I mean really had to rearrange my shit to take them in.  Taxi Driver I had to sit through 3 times to stay awake.  It wasn't until I watched Deer Hunter that I realized how adapted I had become to the level of violence in films. Don't get me wrong-I love getting my mind blown.  It was like my entire body was waiting for a 2 and a half minute shot Russian Roulet (sp?) with Christopher Walkins and that was 2 hours into the movie.  That is one of the best movies of all time, but it was agonizing to do.
Over time, there is a huge change in approaches to acting, directing and cash.
I like listening to the directors cut of shit like The Cell. Tarsem Singh makes it a point to let you know where he was at and where the cash was at.  He is talanted enough that you get that if he had the cash to play with it would be a different thing.  I can't help thinking it would be different with others.

And your point is???

Bethnai -> RE: Pacino & De Niro: embarrasing themselves? (4/23/2008 10:15:07 PM)

Given the time era, a horses head in the sheets is cool shit. Is that a problem?

Bethnai -> RE: Pacino & De Niro: embarrasing themselves? (4/23/2008 10:41:00 PM)

I didn't think it would be.
