If you watch Gordon Ramsey kitchen nightmares and compare the UK series and the USA series it is very noticable that many of the American men will openly cry, and be filmed crying. I can't think of an episode from the UK  where men were filmed crying. Is it more acceptable in the US for men to cry. Whilst living out there I didn't get this impression but now I am wondering if it is.

I absolutely love Kitchen Nightmares, and Hell's Kitchen.  My world stops when either one is on.  I would LOVE to get my little hands on the UK version.  Is there a UK version of Hell's Kitchen?

I don't think it is more "acceptable" for men to cry, which is probably the very reason that the US version catches it and puts it on the air.  They think we want to see big manly men blubbering like babies.  And perhaps the men are so eager for their 15 minutes of fame, that they don't care if they are boo-hooing into the camera. 

On a side note, Chef Ramsey can come make me cry any day.  And beg for mercy, and quiver...Yes Chef!  Whatever you say Chef! [sm=hearts.gif]

I LOVE that show, like alot alot.

as for the crying bit, I dont see alot of men I knw ever admiting to crying...and have only seen a very few do it ever. only in times of great stress or sadness. Women...well I am a girl...we cry alot, sometimes...just because we can and its cathartic and it makes us feel better.

I think in British society *even today* men still find certain emotions hard & therefore the 'its the British stiff upper lip' thing comes to mind.

Personal emotions are not for airing in public, it devalues them and makes them shallow. If I'm upset or greaving, I don't need to show it to the world to give my emotions affirmation.

I can't abide such public emotion that was on display over Diana, it was mawkish and rather distasteful, it was ersatz because you can't greave over someone you don't know, though you can empathize with the sense of loss which is completely different.

When it comes to crying on TV reality shows, most of the time it appears to be self pity and there is nothing more open to public ridicule than self pity, especially from talentless individuals who have egoes big enough to think they deserve TV time.

Public emotion is calculated and the person involved usually has an agenda.

I think its ok for men to cry as long as they aren't cry babies, I feel the same way towards women. There's nothing worse then some overly emotional person who is always crying at the drop of a hat. But if the stress is there and the need then go ahead, I'll just turn my TV off.

I can't stand sentimentalism. These people (men, or women) who feel they have to cry in front of cameras to express how in tune they are with their emotions make me wanna puke. It's like they went to too many therapy sessions.

As an adult man, I have never cried.

I whine, rant, complain, get snappy,  everything but.

This hugely was a problem when mourning the passing of my father.

think I am moody now?  10 years ago- THAT was moody.

I admire a man that can cry.

I cringe when a camera milks real life tradjedy to show a sobbing person. I feel like I am looking where I ought not look, andam a vulture enabling the news to do so- since I tuned in- thus making me an accomplace; exasperating the situation.

I feel that if a man is able to be comfortable enough with himself to display emotion in  front of others, good for him. I see truth in emotion, and there is a difference between that and crocodile tears.

I understand  there are those that don't like to see a man with emotion, but really, what is the difference between a man and a woman, are we the same species ?

I see nothing wrong with a man who can show emotion and cry. I do find problems with the camera crew vultures who wait around with their spare cameraman waiting for it to happen. The british audience does not get a thrill out of seeing the emotional breakdowns during reality shows, perhaps, as much as the american ones do.
Fox can and will cry in front of me. Angel will on occasion, especially during movies that touch him. Neither of them cry at the drop of a hat, it takes real emotion for it.
Stress causes emotion, emotion can cause tears in both genders... its just a matter of whether there is a waiting cmera there to show the world or not.

I think it is all scripted.. they most likely have drip bottles of saline to put in the eyes before the take. I can't believe people are taken in by these so-called reality shows. They are entertaining but no more real then some profile pictures on CM.

Well, if that is the case, maybe they are doing people a favour, displaying that males might not be the senseless, unemotional robots people think they are.

I have no issue with men showing emotion. I've seen US Marines with tears streaming down their faces, and they are not embarrassed by it.

It just seems to me (not being totally able to tell which poster here is male or which is female in every case) that the matter seems to be viewed differently by men and women.

I think it is mostly men who have issues with seeing other men showing emotion, perhaps not a manly thing to do, whatever manly is.

Mmmm, Hell's Kitchen, I'll have to see if that is available for me to watch. I've seen all the KN shows already. Keep missing "The F Word" which is on Saturday Mornings on BBC America.

I don't watch hardly any TV. I certainly don't watch any "ridicule" shows like this one or Idol, or whatever. I generally disdain "reality" shows that are anything but reality and instead tightly scripted setups intended to favor certain dramatic results.
