NEW YORK - Many U.S. military analysts used as commentators on Iraq by television networks have been groomed by the Pentagon, leaving some feeling they were manipulated to report favorably on the Bush administration, The New York Times said in Sunday editions.

A Times report examining ties between the Bush administration and former senior officers who acted as paid TV analysts said they got private briefings, trips and access to classified intelligence meant to influence their comments.

"Records and interviews show how the Bush administration has used its control over access and information in an effort to transform the analysts into a kind of media Trojan horse — an instrument intended to shape terrorism coverage from inside the major TV and radio networks," the newspaper said.

And if you're wondering why this whole project has come to grief, you need look no further.

The problem with passing out jugs of Kool-Aid like this is that you inevitably end up drinking it yourself.  At which point, you may as well have blown out your brains, becuase they are unavailable for use.

Garbage in, garbage out.

I really don't know of a worse way to start a war or to prosecute a war once it's started.

Not really a good thing, Level, but it does balance out the commentators who are groomed by liberal academia.  One that stuck in my brain was from the first few days of the invasion (when the New York Times was running headlines like "Saddam Battles Choppers: Downs One") was a guy I can only describe as a prancing little fairy (no disrespect intended to my gay friends) talking about how it was impossible for our troops to keep going without standing down to sleep and rest for a few days.

Iraqi intelligence (& friends) certainly listened in to our broadcasts, so a little psychological warfare likely saved many lives on both sides. It probably convinced many Iraqi units to give up (which many did). Call it propaganda warfare, call it little white lies, it saves American lives and it probably saved Iraqi lives as well.

Can't have that though, can we.

Perhaps they were suggesting that troop movements not get broadcast while they were in operation as had happened in the Desert Storm exercise.  If the intent was to make Bush look wise, or the military to look terribly successful, they don't seem to be doing that too well.
Perhaps they were trying to avoid or minimize press black outs as had happened in prior wars.
i think in WWII there were posted signs "Loose Lips Sink Ships"
The former Soviet Union, i think, used to post signs that translated to "You never know who is listening."
The folks that you are up against hope and pray (to Allah or whomever) that you think this is ridiculously paranoid, and that you will ignore common sense.
The more things change, the more they stay the same.
