International travel is an enriching experience at any price. Although, doing your homework, networking and mixing with and listening to the locals will both save you money and is part of the experience as well. I would also suggest that you stay away from Americanized accomodations, restaurants, etc. Immerse yourselves in the local culture and, while being as prudent and aware of your surroundings as you would be at home, don't succumb to fear and paranoia . I think that if you travel with an open mind, curiosity, respect and a willingness to try to communicate despite language handicaps, you will find many Europeans ( or kiwis, Ozzies, Asians, etc.) willing and even eager to help enrich your experience. Bon Voyage !
