International travel is an enriching experience at any price. Although, doing your homework, networking and mixing with and listening to the locals will both save you money and is part of the experience as well.

I would also suggest that you stay away from Americanized accomodations, restaurants, etc. Immerse yourselves in the local culture and, while being as prudent and aware of your surroundings as you would be at home, don't succumb to fear and paranoia . I think that if you travel with an open mind, curiosity, respect and a willingness to try to communicate despite language handicaps, you will find many Europeans ( or kiwis, Ozzies, Asians, etc.) willing and even eager to help enrich your experience.

Bon Voyage !

And you can hitchike and people will pick you up in the countryside.

Advising a young woman to hitchike? Now you have finally gone of the deep end, right?

Most parts of Europe are at least as safe, if not safer than the US, however, that does not mean that you can ditch common safety rules.

If you get into the Cologne area, go ahead and drop me a line.

Right. It's not that the Europeans are unsafe; people are unsafe. I wouldn't go hitch-hiking here, so I most definitely wouldn't do it in a place where I'm a foreigner.

Y'all are all AWESOME! Hunnie is coming over tonight and I can spring all of this information on him, lol!

And Cologne would be fantastic! Maybe we'll just swing on by and you can show us around? :-D

GreedyTop -> RE: International Travel (4/19/2008 12:57:06 PM)

FWIW: one of my friends who uses the couchsurfing site has hitchhiked around most of western europe without trouble.  She's 26 yrs old and VERY VERY attractive.

Monkeyontuesday -> RE: International Travel (4/19/2008 1:30:54 PM)

Yeah, I've thought about it some, and the couchsurfing thing sounds like a lot of fun... I'll have a tour guide every place I go!! I love little hole in the wall places, and they'll know exactly where they all are... Now, just to convince hunnie... lol!

GT, are you in Europe or the states? I am under the impression that you are planning to move overseas, but I could be just making that up...

GreedyTop -> RE: International Travel (4/19/2008 1:34:11 PM)

I'm in FL for now. Working on the moving to England thing... theres just that pesky issue of finding a job there...LOL

There are some truly fascinating things to see there, especially from the times of the Roman Empire. And not far from Cologne is a wonderfully restored castle, called Schloß Burg. If you want to see some of the older things you will not find in the US, those are worth a visit.

I am not saying that hitchhiking is a sure way into rape and/or murder, but I would not do it personally, and would never advise somebody to do it. To big a risk in my opinion. However, this is something everybody needs to decide for himself.

heehee! hooray!

now, to tell my mother I'm going off to a foreign country to stay with strangers for two weeks... *gets battle gear on... Whimpers* Anyone wanna talk to her for me? lol.

Daddysredhead -> RE: International Travel (4/19/2008 1:53:04 PM)

Some of these posts have made me laugh so loud I scared my cat out of the room!  [:D]

I say go international.  Most Americans have never traveled outside our borders and have no earthly idea how lucky we are and how damn ungrateful they are when compared to some countries.

I've been to London, Amsterdam, Dubai, and Sri Lanka.  Try being the only white person in a sea of locals in the Middle East or Asia.  It's fun!  One little child (probably around 2 yrs. old) on my ex-hub's tea estate had never seen a white person ever, not on tv, nothing.  She saw me and her eyes got huge and she asked her mother if I was a spirit.  It was so cute, I bent down and petted her hair and spoke to her in her native language.  She smiled and pushed my sleeve up and rubbed my arm to see if the white came off.  That...  was priceless, and so completely innocent.   [:)]

I think people who have never traveled and bitch and moan about had bad the States are should have a giant crane arm pick them up from the sky and drop them into a 3rd world country where they don't speak the language and don't have a place to stay.  It'll make you lose your nasty attitude about "home" really fast.

Monkeyontuesday -> RE: International Travel (4/19/2008 2:11:03 PM)

GT -- where in Florida?

Hunnie says if I make good grades this semster (which I will.. I need them scholarship monies!!), then he'll help pay for me to go to The Keys with some of his friends for a little bit in the summer.

Man, I love having someone around that has a REAL job... LOL.

Hear hear, DRH!!

And for heavens sake, if you're going to travel to a non english speaking country (and this is not aimed at YOU, specifically,  Monkey) at least learn how to say Please and Thank you in the native tongue.. it goes a LONG way towards improving your interactions with the natives.......

Monkeyontuesday -> RE: International Travel (4/19/2008 2:15:55 PM)

o0o0o... Very nice! Plus, I have hunnie there. He's not threatening in the least, but... erm... could hold his own...?

Naw, Imma go anyway. I've been through worse; I can handle most anything ;-)
