Truly...how's it going out there?

I haven't looked for a job in 31 years, but friends I know throughout the country are telling me it's rough.

If you're looking for a job, or want a better one (meaning, you've been checking out the want ads)....tell me where you are (your location)...and are you finding good results?

How long have you been looking...compare it to 1, 2 and 3 years ago....wages...rents, or cost of homeownership in your area...I'm truly curious.

I've been offered 2 jobs this year but not looking... the jobs were in construction paying about $27 hour... not a lot but here in Missouri you will find very low cost of living... homes are dirt cheap compared to other areas. You can buy a new 3 or 4 bedroom home on the outskirts of the county for under $200,000

I am in metro Detroit.  'Nuff said?  Literally dozens of clients have left the state in search of work--the ones who are young enough, anyway.  We have the highest rate of unemployment in the country, and the highest rate of foreclosures.  Yes, houses can be had cheaply---but folks are unwilling to buy because they might not have their jobs in a year.  My wealthy clients continue to get wealthier, though, as the executive levels continue to bleed their companies dry.  [8|]

Me, I would love a better job, but I am damn happy to be employed.

everything is on the rise in Chicago - gas prices to county tax on bottled water to the basic fare for a cab ride (at one point it was $1.25 soon it will be over $3.00 - that's for one passenger).  i've noticed with the steadily increase going on here, attendance to shows is rapidly dropping ...some are opting to miss their favorite bands to save a few pennies which does effect the bands because certain venues pay what they draw to the show.

personally, i haven't worked in an office type setting since Aug 17th, 2000 (that's day i quit my job because i chose to care for my brain injured daughter after her accident) however i'm looking for something part-time with flex scheduling. with her therapies and counseling schedules still ongoing, i know it's going to be difficult.

Well being rural- we hardly see the feast times.  So the spike in home prices is minimal.

Am I better off today then 4, 8 years ago?

Yes I am.   I dont attribute that to the prez. It is because I made some shrewd choices.

To do so again, would be hard.  It is about working smarter, not harder.

I am in a simplification, austarity mode.   My phone bill came.   $4.20 for a landline.  I dropped the call pack. I dont make alot of calls.

I also closed 8-10 credit union small accounts. leaving 12ish to further widdle down.

We are in the oil patch here so the job market looks good except when oil prices drop.  Right now companies are begging for inland and offshore workers.  That means since people are making money then the rest of the sectors are doing well also.

My Business consulting has slowed down, which means income is down. As a business consultant I get to see the financials of the companies I assist. Those companies are not necessarily doing worse, but the decisions makers keep saying how they need to tighten their belts because "Don't you know we are in a recession." The economy is slow, and it will likely get somewhat worse, but this recession panic is assisting in slowing things down.

I brushed up my resume for the possibility to go into the work force again, and looked at some job sites. I find there are more jobs available that I am qualified for, with salaries that are about in line with inflation from when I worked corporate before. There are just more people trying to get those jobs.

I'm not doing too bad on my pension.
Funny, no-one wanted to be in the military in the 70's-90's.
I was making about $16,000 a year back in those days while a lot of the guys I grew up with were Union Truckers making $40-$50k a year back then and they laughed at me.
This area (Myrtle Beach) is growing so fast that they have been advertising for Firefighters, Police Officers, Teachers and they said on the News that we have a shortage of 20 Para-Medics!
They even offer a "Moving Package" and "Mortgage Package" for Para-Medics!
This area is Booming!
New Post Offices, new Hospitals, new Fire Stations.
A lot of retirees from up North are moving here and buying new houses and condos, furniture, and especially new cars!
Seems like all the guys I see driving brandnew Corvettes, Mustang GT's or Shelby's even are in their 50's-60's
There's a LOT of money comming to this area! A great place to start a business.
Plus, we just had the 400 acre "HardRock Cafe" park open and we'll be getting some top rate music groups here.
And if you have a "degree" in sociology, psychology, or political science Starbucks and Home Depot and the restaurants will offer you a job.
