My UM and I toured the USS Wisconsin last summer.  What a wonderful memory.  Thanks for the reminder.

I loved the Warning sign that said "When Red Light is on, MSL Firing in Progress.  Seek Shelter."

It put things into perspective.

I seem to recall similar signs on the island of Vieques, Puerto Rico. Roosevelt Roads naval firing range.

I want to travel more.  I'm heading north in a couple of weeks - Pacific Northwest and British Columbia - but I'm itching to go overseas again.  Soon, I hope!

I was in Vancouver last Christmas. Got some kinky friends there. I really like that area.

One of my most memorable journeys was on a yacht(Sigma 38) from Stockholm in Sweden, a round trip lasting two weeks, some thousand odd miles in the summer of '93,where in the first few days, bang on the summer solstice, the latitude we were at, the sun just changed position, i.e, it did'nt go down, which was very disorientating, got the impression we were sailing around in a circle if it were not for the compass and me at that point being sea sick, could not go below, so slept on the deck in the weird sunlight, every time I woke, I thought I had'nt been asleep, very weird.

Then the first Uk boat into Ventspils in Latvia to be met with a combat clothed machine gun wielding military person demanding our papers, saying only a few days before, the mines had been removed from outside the harbour, where we had just sailed. There, the only beer to be had was in the town whore house, American beer at that, but was not prepared to pay $5 a tin, besides we had gallons of spirits on board the boat.

Then off to Klaipeda in Lithuania, a place when we arrived, they not replying to our hails on the radio, decided to answer with a gun boat, deck gun pointed at us, cut sharp across the bows forcing a gybe, we had to follow with deck gun still pointing and alongside submarines in a heavy swell we had to moor, wreaking havoc with the glass fibre of the boat. There we got asked how much cash we had, some $3000 US, just in case we lost the mast or other major damage. They took an inventory of our electronic goods, cameras and the like, with the warning not to spend too much, as the country was that next day changing it's currency. At the time, we never knew what the coutesy flag of the country was, so had a sailmaker make one as soon as we stopped. It with the currency changed that next day, ho hum.

Next port, civilisation, Gdynia in Poland, where we visited Gdansk and were made very welcome. Then onto Wisby in Gotland, then Oxelosunde in Sweden, Nynashamn and back to Stockholm where in those last four ports, we nearly got ran over by a car ferry in a storm(with Wagner's ride of the valkyries, blasting through the boat speakers in the stern), ran aground , crashed the boat, had magnetic anomalies and just got generally pissed and a whole load more happenings, if I were to write, I would be here all night.

A fantastic and enlightening experience, which now as I have managed to recover all my records and photographs, intend to when I get my act together, blog it on live journal

That sounds like one hell of an adventure. Was it on one of those "barefoot" cruises" where the passengers are also the crew?

That midnight sun can be really weird. Back around 98, IIRC, I spent 3 weeks on Kodiak Island, about 5 miles up the bay from Larsen Bay (basically a cannery), in Juky & August. We were building a cabin on some land my ex-bro-in-law had won the right to buy from a native lottery. 40,000 pounds of wood. NOT kiln dried. All brought in by boat and dumped on the beach about 1/2 mile from the building site.

This could be a really long story. So, about the long days. I really liked campfires, so I scrounged all the driftwood, etc. I could find, and built a fire every "night". We'd sit around sipping beer or wine and telling stories and such, until someone would point out we should get to bed. "Why? What time is it?" "Three in the morning." "You're kidding! The sun is still up!" That was just so strange, having only two or three hours of night that was not really any darker than twilight.

Saw my first Kodiak bear sort of up close and personal. [:-]

Thank you for your oh-so-perceptive and poignant contribution to the thread.

I can't believe that so few people have actually travelled anywhere farther than their local Wal-Mart. WTF

Back around 87, my first trip to the German-speaking countries, we were in Vienna, and decided to make a day trip to Hungary, which, at that time, was an enemy of Ronald Reagan's.

SO we got to the border crossing, a lovely stone house with large trees shading it, and got our visa forms to fill out. Duly we did so, and handed them in, and waited. And waited and waited... (as bad as trying to get into the US today). I spoke maybe 5 words of German, they spoke no English, and I spoke no Hungarian. We tried to find out what the delay was, and they tried to explain, but nobody understood. Finally, someone who evidently had access to a dictionary or something brought the forms out. He pointed at Jennie's. "Good." He pointed at Sharon's. "Good." He pointed at mine. "No good." We finally figured out that mine was no good because I had filled mine out with green ink, rather than black. Once we rectified it, we were on our way inside the "Iron Curtain". Where we had absolutely no problems. That's another tale, though.

travel...my father is retired navy, so we did a lot of driving to see "the sights" wherever he was stationed, and driving from one base to another.

my favorite was in 1976, though.  they'd bought a new toyota station wagon, and we already had a 65 mustang witn no a/c.  there were two of us kids and a dog and a cat.  we were driving from houston to san diego.  my brother fell off the handlebars of my cousin's bicycle the day we set out, so he had stitches in his leg.

i convinced my dad we should stop in motels with swimming pools. he did.  i taunted my brother with how nice the pools were while he snarled and pouted every evening.  (one of the few times i got out the better between us...)

we couldnt be in the same car, and somehow he ended up getting to ride in the a/c with mama.  i was stuck in the mustang (ok i enjoyed the mustang cause it only had lap belts, and i could ride with my feet on the dashboard, and watch the chihuahua jump around the car catching flies.  weird dog.) and got to fryyyyyyyyyyyy.  but i had the ice chest and could have all the soda i wanted when i wanted.  good tradeoff.

all was fine till we were RIGHT at the california line.  that's when the sandstorm struck.  the windows in the mustang couldnt keep the sand out, i had to dig out a couple of bandanas.  the dog was NOT  happy.  shorts + unhappy yappy dog = shredded legs.

my dad kept snarling "it is an ADVENTURE!"

now, its a funny memory.

Hahaha I'm a Hippie. We've been passe for 40 years.

Reminds me of the time I got busted for hitchhiking in Castle Rock, Colorado. The jail didn't have a kitchen, so they'd march us down to a diner on the town square. I thought this was demeaning, so I went on a fast. 3 days was the sentence, so I fasted for 3 days.
I got out and immediately started hitching south. I ran into a couple German freaks. They had some very nice Czech acid, and they turned me on. I remember lying on the side of a hill right at the continental divide watching the clouds, and breathing that sweet Rocky Mountain air, and just having a very mellow spiritual experience. This was around May or June 1970.

I guess that's a travel experience.
