ownedgirlie -> RE: text messages- what do you think? (4/15/2008 6:41:55 PM)

Texting is a form of communication and one I have no problem with.  I text often.  I rarely feel like talking on the phone and having a quick text exchange suits me just fine to firm up plans, say a quick hello, ask a quick question, whatever.  I have an unlimited text plan on my phone and before I start texting someone I ask if they are charged for message or not.  If they're a fellow texter, well no problem.  If not, I respect that.  Just as I hope others respect that I don't like talking on the phone.

Once my brother-in-law was giving me a ridiculously hard time about texting and how only morons do it, blah blah blah.  A few months later he was picking me up at the airport and my flight was departing late.  We were all being told to turn our cells off so I shot off a quick text to him to tell him we were late.  He appreciated it.  So much for moronic. As for ads on text, I hate 'em.  Good Lord I once did an American Idol vote on text and I couldn't get rid of their ads for a long time.  Then again, I don't like being solicited like that.

I have ATT, they let me block all text.  No way would I want to pay for a commercial.

Verizon to Verizon is free but those telemarketers sending me spam aren't. I wish there was a way to block texts not coming from numbers in my phone book.

I’ve never really understood text messaging. I mean, you’ve got the phone right there in your hand so why not just call the person? My cell phone doesn’t even have text messaging. Why pay extra for something I’m not really interested in? In fact I keep the cell phone turned off most of the time and only use it if the truck should break down or something. I really don’t want to make it too easy for people to get a hold of me (if it’s really important they’ll put some effort into contacting me). I guess I’m starting to turn into an old curmudgeon. I am old enough to remember when making a phone call meant you had to go the room in the house where the phone was and having to stay there until the call was over.

wolf texts our daughter so she will call him back.  her co-workers send her naughty pictures on the phone, and text messages.

i like the texts ok, but am not addicted to them...i found out recently you can send a text message to a landline!  an automated voice tells you  where its coming from, and then reads the message to you.  one of my im's friends caught hell over that.  (she called 2 hours after his phone time was up...he has a curfew on the phone.)

TheEngineer already bought me a phone (pink razr) and we nigh on had an argument in the store because he really wanted to get me an iphone.  piffle, i dont need that much technology!

Me too.  We had a yellow rotary phone attached to the wall, that was rented from Ma Bell as part of our telephone bill charges.

But I worked in IT for years and Mr. Wonderful is a techno-geek.  I love technology!

Love texts. Have unlimited ones on my phone. Have a phone that flips open to a full keyboard. Spend half my day at work sending dirty ones (oops - I didn't say that.) Text sex can be great! And I always spell out my words and use proper punctuation.

ShadowKing -> RE: text messages- what do you think? (4/16/2008 12:03:00 AM)

I tend to see it as a communication medium.

I text people who prefer it, email those that like that, and call the backwards ones. I guess my goal is to communicate as effectively as possible with the other party.

Sometimes it is way easier to send a quick message without having to go into details. Long or important conversations tend to do better over the phone.

One KEY thing that I try to keep in mind is that tone does not get transmitted in email or text. I am very clear about what I am saying when I use the written form. I try to use less humor, and especially avoid the more obtuse jokes. (I have a very dry, almost British sense of humor.)

pahunkboy -> RE: text messages- what do you think? (4/16/2008 5:30:30 AM)

yeah- the premise of PAYING to RECIEVE a call/text is odd- and we allowed it. shame.

texts are good for when it isnt conducive to talk- like when standing in line, waiting at DR office, dentist- to me it gives me something to do- w/o onloookers knowing my business.  I can say things on text that I dont care for others to hear- but friends that know me would relate.   Living in a small town every conversation is overheard- and subject to the townsy mentality scruteny.  In metros you can say what you mean, in small towns you cant. [it is just easier to move on with your day then to get into an explanation as to why ...]

Oh, I love technology too (especially the one that allows me to communicate with my fellow perverts around the world and download their photos for whack off material). I just don’t want people bugging me when I don’t want to be bugged (like when I’m whacking off). Our rotary phone was that sickly puke green color – I don’t know what my parents saw in that but, then again, this was the age of leisure suits and Formica counter tops. The legacy of the rotary phone lives on, however – we still use the word dial as a synonym for call.

And see, people calling my phone feels more intrusive to me than sending a text message!  I rarely answer it.  I'll talk when I feel like talking, or when I can talk.  I have no qualms about letting calls go to voicemail, and even not checking my voicemail all day.  A received text message doesn't mean I have to respond to it or even look at it asap.  I'm at no one's beck and call except Mr. Wonderful's.  :)

Yeah I know that green you're talking about.  It's baby poop green, haha.  Interesting about "dial."  People still have "dial up" internet connections, but I don't think they're actually dialing anything, heh.
