ORIGINAL: missfrillypants cats, especially male cats, become more mellow when they get fixed. i think it might be something to do with the hormones. and yes, cats are very capable of hypnotising you into cuddling with them. scientists are actually saying that they think cats domesticated themselves, which makes total sense if you've met one. they saw how the dogs were getting fed and petted and stuff by humans and they were like "i can do that better. you: silly human! aren't i adorable? don't you love me??? don't you want to give me food? *purr purr* it was subtle mind control from the very begining. *giggle* More seriously, I think there was some serious symbiosis going on here early on. Back in the Day, Egypt got one inundation per year from the Nile. Outside the Nile Valley proper, the climate for growing things, absent copius water, purely sucked. And the NIle's gift of water and sediment wasn't all that predictable. Which means that the locals had to store grain in good years to tide them over during lean ones. Which brings us to the Little Guys .... Who basically volunteered themselves for the job of keeping the granaries reasonably secure from foragers. Yeah, after a few hundred years of this, supplemented by the odd quasi-feral cat deciding that extended adolescence in the protection of a human looked like a better bet than duking it out with predators one or two pegs higher on the food chain, and the human's reaction when their granary guardian turned into a friendly fuzzball ... they ended up with cat cults.
