(CBS) What if we told you that a guy with no background in science or medicine-not even a college degree-has come up with what may be one of the most promising breakthroughs in cancer research in years?

Well it's true, and if you think it sounds improbable, consider this: he did it with his wife's pie pans and hot dogs.

His name is John Kanzius, and he's a former businessman and radio technician who built a radio wave machine that has cancer researchers so enthusiastic about its potential they're pouring money and effort into testing it out.

Here's the important part: if clinical trials pan out-and there's still a long way to go-the Kanzius machine will zap cancer cells all through your body without the need for drugs or surgery and without side effects. None at all. At least that's the idea.

Microwaves operate similarly. Fascinating.

It was a pretty incredible story. Now, if the tests pan out for humans.....

That was really cool.  The nanoparticle part can be tricky - some folks recently found that they can (accidentally) get into DNA.  It'll take some tweaking.

Gonna keep an eye on this one!

Wow, that's amazing. I can't wait to see how the clinical trials go. I'm guessing you'll keep us updated, Level?

Well, it's going to be unfolding over the next few years; I think they said maybe in four years they'd be doing human trials. Let's keep our fingers crossed.

I have some doubts. If we can target specifically "nanoparticles" into cancer cells avoiding healthy cells we do not need to cook the meat. We can simply attatch something to the partickle that kills the cell. I do not think specific targeting is really possible and if so we will have the same or worse side-effects than in case of chemo or radiation theraphy. However, every reseach brings us closer to the cure.

The trick is reliably targetting cancer cells, which they don't present a solution for.  If we could reliably target cancer cells, we'd already have the cancer problem licked through a number of different ways.  It sounds like this might work for a large lump of cancer, but there's no guarantee it'll get the whole tumor, and they currently don't have a way to target it towards cancer spread throughout the body, which is the most fatal kind.

Actually, I saw this on 60 Minutes last night.  It was stated that targeting the "break away" cancer cells that cause secondary tumors is the focus for this device.  The scientists use a specific antibody that "finds" the cells and attach the nanoparticles to those single cells.  This is supposed to work for both single cells and tumors.

I'm not a scientists, nor do I play one on t.v., so I was wondering if the cell structure in the single cells is similar enough to utilize the same antibody to attack the break away cancer?

It is amazing technology and I hope Kanzius gets his dream of seeing the first patient trials before his death.

I am agreeing with Misty here, and were I to be diagnosed with cancer I would certainly search for alternatives, but I would not ever do any chemo or radiation.  That is My choice, and I truly admire people who are willing to go through the pain and illness of the therapy to extend their life.  I am not one of those people.
One alternative here
I have long been of the opinion that there is already a safe and viable cure (some sort of immunotherapy) for cancer but the grant money, as well as the lucrative non-profits, would go by tthe wayside if a cure was actually published and successful.

sounds like the guy who is feeding peeps nano particle gold that attaches supposedly to the cancer cells and then uses microwaves to resonate with the gold heating it and basically cooking the cancer and of course the local good cells too.

Yep that has been around for few years and frankly I am surprized the guy has not killed himself when he started play with salt water...

If in fact this is true that they can find anything other than water that can be resonated via microwaves that will attach to cancer that does not attach anywhere else I see no reason why it would not work.

I heard it was tiger testicles. Or wait, is that for curing Alzheimers? Dammit, I can never keep track of my hokey pseudo-medicines.

Geez... Other than the link, I could have written every word myself. It's amazing how like-minded we are regarding our world views.
