I think the idea of receiving pain is as a sexual pleasure is, in itself, a submissive act.  I can't see that the two can mix.

They can, and they do.  I understand that *for you*, it's an act born of submission - but *acts* are neither dominant nor submissive.  It is all up to the person acting them.

But that is only mho.

There is nothing humble in saying "what a large percentage of people out there say works for them is wrong/impossible/untrue".  That wasn't said to be nasty - just to give perspective.

Last year, at Paradise Unbound, he did a sensuous caning workshop. His demonstration masochist happens to be a dominant. And she lay there, enjoying the sensations well into the workshop, until, as matters became intense for her, she rose up on her hands and knees from the table where she was lying, and (QUOTING HIM):
in an absolute voice of iron, she said, "Harder! And don't stop!!" (END OF QUOTATION)

Except with my owner (because I *am* a switch, but that is irrelevant to my answer), any masochism I engage in is at my direction.  Thus, it's an act/experience born of my dominating the situation.  On purpose, and agreed to by all involved.

I can't speak for anyone else. I know as a Dominant I have never had any desire whatsoever for physical or emotional pain. It wqould be contrary to my personality and would provide no attraction or satisfaction. Period.

But that's just my .02 zlotys. Oviously, other people's milage may -- and does -- vary.

Can a Dominant be a masochist--not a switch, not a top---a pure avowed Dominant?

Of course they can.. In my opinion Dominance and submission are derived from a completely different part of us than Sadism and masochism.. Sure the two seem to go hand in hand.. but with this difference in mind it would be perfectly possible to have a Dominant masochist. To be honest, i do know one in real life.. and it works very well for Him.

Masochism in my mind is just a physical part of the picture.. Dominance is rooted far deeper than that.

The Lifestyle hasn't come up with a special label for this?

Yes. I know of a female domme who is a masochist and likes to carve the word masochist along her arm with a knife
There are what 50 billion humans on the planet.
Any which way is possible.

I know a very Dominant and very masochistic lady.  She uses her submissives to inflicte pain on herself.  She is always in charge.  She does not switch.

sweetnurseBBW -> RE: Masochism and Domination (4/13/2008 6:15:48 PM)

What does being dominant or submissive have to do with masochism? Being a masochist doesn't equate submission nor is a submissive act. Enjoying pain and submitting do not have to be together. Some people are just masochists and do not care about power exchange. It isn't a submissive quality it is a physical and emotional one.  One has nothing to do with the other.
