It might be in the US, but I don't think it's the case, here. Football gangs are all about local identity. People are proud of their towns and cities - misplaced pride perhaps - but pride nonetheless. Some of these blokes are business owners and are doing more than alright for themselves. English culture has always been associated with violence and disorder and what better vehicle for engaging in violence on the back of local pride than a football match where you have large groups of lads from other towns and cities encroaching on your space. Travellers from all over Europe from the 14th century onwards have been shocked by the level of violence and disorder they encounter when they come here; there is a wealth of enlightening quotes that have been documented through the centuries. Even today, Europeans tend to see the English as a breed apart - try watching German television news for their view.
