greetings all,

just wondering if anyone else here does calligraphy? i have been studying tibetan calligraphy (and slowly tibetan language) for the last year or so and am hoping to learn arabic calligraphy eventually as well. i just wrote a blog on the subject if you'd like to see some links/examples of both. i used to think it wasn't all that interesting as an art form but i've found it's incredibly relaxing and just so much fun and so beautiful. and i love looking at websites about it...there is some amazing stuff out there.

any other calligraphers around? what languages? what materials do you use? how did you learn?

i like the way we've done it in my class because it's been very no stress, a few hours in the week only if you have the time, more if you have the time. for us it's a bit different because most of us want to learn tibetan language as well so of course that's a different commitment, and pretty much everyone is tibetan buddhist or has ties to tibetan buddhism, so it's also a bit of a spiritual endeavor.

seriously, though...this is what i did in my life when it came to knitting, painting, photography, and everything else that i love. finally i just put in the time and money when i had it, and now i do it when i can and i try not to beat myself up over the rest of the time, if that makes any sense. i've been trying to find the time to learn to read arabic over the last couple months and i think i've gotten five letters into the whole alphabet, LOL. thankfully there is a sister who's going to help teach qur'an memorization and arabic reading and suchlike over the summer/fall online which will help get my ass in gear immensely. if you have a chance, i'd totally recommend checking around to see who in your area does calligraphy...just having some people to meet with for an hour or so a week who are interested in the same thing can be an amazing way to sort of keep it there and keep your focus there if it's hard. i know for me regardless of how much i love something, if i don't have some sort of impetus, i won't do it. and if you ever want to talk to me about it i'm here! :)

actually (not to derail here), what I'd love is to hear your thoughts on Islam... so often, the 'take' that is put out is the Govt's version,. the media version, and almost entirely from a male perspective...I'd like an unsanitized version, from someone who I admire (that would be YOU!! )

Knitting.. gonna try that, since I sucked ass so badly at crocheting LOL

(like at all...i can do the "okay, talk about islam, go!" thing but direction is good, LOL).

and you are sweet. you're making me blush.

i've never tried crocheting. honestly it scares the bejeezus out of me. knitting is okay, though - the only problem is that the sum total of my skills are casting on, knitting, purling, changing colors, and binding off. one day i'm going to learn to do something other than make scarves, gloves, and washcloths. the other thing is that when you make a mistake, it's not very easy to unmake it (unless you really know your stuff) and sometimes it just shows up out of the middle of nowhere twenty rows down the road, which is kind of crazymaking if you don't have endless supplies of patience.

I took a course that taught it in college as an elective. We never did any language besides English. I learned how to make my own quills, and I used to have a pretty elaborate calligraphy set. I'm sure I still do; it's in a box somewhere amongst my other belongings. I haven't actually sat down and done it in years. I just don't have the time nor the inclination any more.

I was recently in receipt of a letter sent, the likes of I had not seen for such a long time, this letter which was addressed to me was written with the use of the old ink pen, for in the dried ink I could see the scratches of the broad italic nib, but what did surprise the most was the calligraphy style used, a real rare beauty to behold and especially so in this bright new age of flat machine typed script

The letter it was official, an appointment I was to go, but with me I took the envelope and there sought the artist and congratulated them so for taking the trouble to not just write in uninteresting blue biro.

It was good to see, that there are still people intent on keeping alive the art in the written word, a few minutes more is all it takes to write in one's best hand and there show the care taken to think so much of others, it with me goes a long way.

I believe it is good to keep these arts alive, for when the computer age dies whatever shall we all do, some people have come to struggle with something so simple to write in a clear and legible hand.

Im pretty good at it. Not following a pattern, but doing addresses in envelopes. I use 2 or 3 pens. Different colors. Pink -purple- certain letters. The finished peice looks too good to ruin. :-)

Hi Annabelle

Not sure if its possible to do with Arabic script, but when I was learning to read and write in Runic script, I would do two things;
1) write in English, using the Runic script (mostly transliteration, but by no means exact as some sounds in modern English arent in Runic and some in Runic arent present in modern English) - then read it back. This imprinted the sounds and the script letters quite quickly.
2) chant an alphabet song (no tune required - just a steady rhythm)

i used to do calligraphy (of the english letters variety) but my hands are too uncoordinated now to do so.

i never managed knitting myself but am still a fair hand at crochet (i have a large number of squares that need assembling and is a project for after i move). counted cross stitch was also a real love once.

Arabic calligraphy is beautiful, as is thier architecture.

Agreed. I always stop for a moment and admire anything nicely written by hand.
