Do threads have them?  That's the question of the day (for me).

You see, i've noticed something (i know amazing huh).  When people post a topic that's been "discussed to death" many are willing to provide links to previous posts.  Wonderful!  That is truly helpful however, when someone makes the mistake of actually responding to an old thread, people tend to ask why are you bringing this back up??

Ok, so it's been discussed in the past (possibly over and over) so that means what?  Nobody can have a current discussion about it? They used the link that was provided, posted their own comment to it, assuming (i know, bad thing to do) that responding to what had already been said is what they were *supposed* to do only to hear people bellyache about them ressurecting a "dead" thread.

I personally sat pondering responding to a "dead thread" earlier this week but since I've seen how that's responded to, decided that "wasn't the thing to do".

With that said.  It would seem to me that either you come up with a totally fresh and/or new question/situation or dig through the years of posts and respond to them in your head.   And yes, I'm SURE there's other posts just like this out there.  LOL!

Come on now.  Really.  If the threads truly had an "expiration date, who's in charge of tossing them out or posting a final nail it's coffin; such as

LOL.  And yes, i do feel better now! And yes, I do know that *some* people are just gonna bellyache no matter what.... just like i'm doing now

I just HAD to say...

Fuck'em! This is the age of "hide behind a monitor and say anydamn thing we want" age. People in these forums and others type as they only wish they had the testicular fortitude enough to talk in RL. Me. I type much nicer than I am in person. It's a courtesy I extend for the lack of intent conveyable in writing.  You can't please everyone and most of the time they aren't looking to be pleased any way. It strikes me that a larger number of them would rather be offended just so they can have something to bicker about.

Just my copper.

They do expire, but I'm a former grocer so I keep changing the expiration dates.

Unfortunately, we generally rely on our users' common sense to make that determination, just as we do for whether or not users decide to start non-BDSM threads in the General BDSM forum rather than the more applicable Off Topic forum.  Sometimes things just don't work out as well as we had hoped.

The rule of thumb we go by is that it's ok to resurrect a thread if you're making a meaningful addition to the thread rather than just a frivolous comment, or worse.

If you have something to truly add to the conversation, then sure, resurrect an old thread.  But 99% of the time, they are resurrected to hear the same thing from just one more person (that 100 other people have already said), or to tell the OP what to do (as in the stalker thread), when the OP is long gone and hopefully has done something about it already.

Seriously, look at the "21 year old Master" thread... almost every time it gets resurrected it is only to hear from yet one more young person set to convince people that they are a master.  Great!  Goody for them! Be a master, be a purple-headed, yellow-spotted master if ya want.  Yet nothing new has been added to what has already been said for umpteen pages.

I believe that somewhere in the forum guidelines that appear at the top of each section (and there are different sets of guidelines for each section) is one that says not to resurrect old threads unless you have something new to contribute.  I could be wrong on that part, but I do know that I have seen our lovely Mistress Moderator XI tell people exactly that.
