BISMARCK, N.D. - The government estimated Thursday that up to 4.3 billion barrels of oil can be recovered from the Bakken shale formation in North Dakota and Montana, using current technology.

The U.S. Geological Survey called it the largest continuous oil accumulation it has ever assessed.

The Bakken Formation encompasses some 25,000 square miles in North Dakota, Montana, Saskatchewan and Manitoba. About two-thirds of the acreage is in western North Dakota, where the oil is trapped in a thin layer of dense rock nearly two miles beneath the surface. Companies use pressurized fluid and sand to break pores in the rock and prop them open to recover the oil.

Wow, that would meet our needs for decades.

Wow, that would meet our needs for decades.

The US imports 12 million barrels a day. So 4.3 billion barrels is roughly one year of import independence. A very very long way from decades.

Has anyone considered the costs involved in such an operation ? Economically I think we would be lucky to see it for a hundred bucks a barrell. Ecologically you don't even want to know, but it would probably be similar to what is left behind by strip mining.

I am not an environmentalist, but there are some things that are just going too far. I mean I will not dump used motor oil down the sewer, but I sure will dump it on this goddam tree that keeps trying to grow through the foundation of my house. It just won't die, I mean I cut it down and drilled down into it as far as I could, dumped powdered copper sulfate in the hole and dribbled water on it for weeks. Sorry I don't have a backhoe and a bricklayer who works for free.

This is, however, the city. When I get to the wilderness I have a different attitude, which is to leave it as it was, as close to it as possible anyway.

I am a problem solver by nature, and I look for the cause of a problem before a solution, and when possible my solution addresses the cause. As such my opinion is this : we consume too much. That is the root cause of the problem. Therefore the best solution is to reduce consumption. Simple logic.

However, implementation of the best solution is sometimes elusive. Even more elusive to the powers that be apparently.

A giant lightbulb just went off in my head, but I won't hijack.

Later.

Since part of this deposit is in Canada does this mean that we are going to declare war on Canada next?

If you read the article they are already mining it.

However for your tree problem.  I have found out the hard way salt kills everything.  If you could get enough salt down to the roots the tree "may" die.
We are trying to hire a driveay guy to put in a new upper driveway for us.  So, with the snow..we throw salt on to break up the ice.  Same thing they do with streets its just most people don't throw it on their own property.
Anyway, then you come by with the snowblower and kick it all off onto the vegetation.  Now I had a whole lot dead.  This year I switched to apriplane de-icer.  Much better for the environment..etc.  No salt.

Anyway, salt kills everything in its tracks..so if you used a lot.  I can't imagine that tree surviving.

a city ordinance prohibits  pouring bleach on any tree

oil in shale has been around- the thing is for it to be cost effective-  we are heading toward $175.00 a barrel- so no surprise there.

likely that nuclear reactors will be needed.

as far as consuming less.....  that only goes so far.  quit making babies.  there are too many rats in the cage.  we do need to do things more effienctly.

Don,t spotted trail trout live in that area, and desperatly need protection, as well as all the ducks that fly through.

I imagine that we will very soon learn that this is the last unpolluted wilderness in the Continental United States, hundreds of endangered species depend on it, its critical for the functioning of the atmosphere, and must be protected forever, yada yada.

Too Bad it could cut our oil imports by around 5% a year for 20+ years, or so.  While providing Jobs for Americans, improving our balance of trade, and removing some dollars from the Mid east.  Also while there would indeed be costs to the enviroment to drill and use that oil, it would infact end up being amongst the greenest oil, as well as highest labor benefits, in the world.  But just like ANWR, a huge political movement will work to keep this in the ground.  Even Freaking John Mc Cain doesn't want ANWR tapped.  There is huge amounts of Natural Gas in both places also, which can actually replace oil usage in a  much cleaner way for home and heating and power generation.

Thompson, many of the left leaning folks on these boards have been of the opiunon that Kuwaiti Slant Drilling gave Saddam the right to invade, it was really understandable and no big deal, were you one of those?  But honestly if we wanted to attack Canada and take its oil, we would already have done so.  Nothing could stop us.

Me............. I own the mineral rights to one half of North Dakota. It was left to me by a crazy old Uncle that won it from his Mandan and Arikara card playin' buddies.

Please take note this was written with a smile on my face....yeah, humor; what a concept.

We need to quit thinking oil and start thinking of alternatives.  Oh wait the oil companies don't want that...guess it won't happen.
