colouredin -> Punishment in history (4/9/2008 11:38:48 AM)

So as not to derail another topic on BDSM and history. The post reminded me of a crime module I took at uni last year.

(for referance I am talking about Britian here)

Ok brief overview, basically the body used to be seen as the site of all problems, the four humours and all that. Therefore the body was the thing treated and punished. This gradually changed as the idea of humanity and the mind became more prominant (signified by the use of more mind based treatment in places like Bedlam and the use of prisons for punishment) this latter period is not what interests me but the former, namely the type of punishment used.

Branding - Branding was mostly used for people who had recieved benifit of clergy (first time convictions for the crime, only available to men) Manslaughter resulted in an M being branded on the thumb for Thiefs it was a T and for blasphemers it was a B on the cheek (interesting that it was seen as a worse crime than manslaughter due to the religious nature of the time) This was basically a decrease in the sentance from death.

Whipping - Most likely punishment for petty larceny, there were whipping posts in the centre of towns where people would gather to watch the punishment. Normally there was a stipulation that the whipping continued till the back was covered in blood.

Pillory/Stocks - The pillory was what we now often refer to as the stocks, where the head and wrists were put through the holes in the wood, often their ears were nailed to the wood and people would throw stuff at them, many people died this way. When they were removed often their ears would be ripped off. The stocks is where where the ankles were put through the holes. Again it was based a lot in humilation.

The Bridle - Often used for scolds, it was an iron cage that went over the persons head and often had a piece of metal pretruding into the mouth as a gag, the woman (it was almost always women convicted of being scolds) was walked through the town again to a central area where she had to stay for  normally a few hours, it was uncomfy and could cut the tounge up.

Firstly it interests me that most of these punishments had the idea of humilation at its core. People loved to watch others be punished and it would add to the shame, which was meant to be a way to put off others and repeat offending. Also I remember at the time of the course being totally fascinated by the fact that a lot of the punishments are where many BDSM tools/acts originated. This is by no means an exhaustive list of the punishments, just a select few. Really I am not posing a question or anything just simply that it really interested me. Of course this is all very vague and you can fine out a lot more using the net I really recomend http://www.oldbaileyonline.org if you are interested, it outlines punishement and crime and also has lists of cases in the old baily. If parts of this post are not factually accurate I appologise, I tried to read up as much as possible but I couldnt find my uni notes and I didnt want to write a huge essay on it because number one I would bore you, number two it wouldnt be as eloquantly written as other sources and number three I wanted to just simplify it so that people could just see what i mean.

Facinating post, I know I've always been interested in the types of punishments used historically at sea- flogging and keelhauling, for example! Shame my history A'level wasnt this interesting- 16th century politics just didnt have the same interest!

Here's a simple introductory book on that topic that I have in my personal library:

"Rack, Rope, and Red-Hot Pincers: A History of Torture and Its Instruments" by Geoffrey Abbott.

I thought I had one or two others but I can't find them right now folks....

Ah, thanks, but no, I was sure I had a few other books here... "Thy Rod & Staff" is about spanking and it's by Edward Anthony but its more about erotic than punishment spanking if I recall correctly.

I have too many damned books, can't remember what they all cover. And yet I keep getting more...

Scolds are like nags, people who bitched in the street and shouted at people that kind of thing, its interesting with that in that the punishment fit the crime, the women were being punished for speaking by having their speech restricted in most cases, all they could make was muffled noises (not all had the gag section but many did)

I recently visited the science museum in London, and right at the back, up a flight of barely-used stairs, was the science of art and medicine- a facinating display of medical equipment, a random mummy and several scolds masks and similar. Interesting to look at, to imagine how they would feel on- but surely not nagging is the easiest way to avoid a nasty punishent ever?

One of the issues with the "scolds" were that they were seen as stepping out of their "gender place."

Indeed, also as I have said reputation and humilation was SO important back then, if someone was humilating you in public it was a really really big deal, especially if as Aylee said that person is a female doing it to a male that was the worst, it was undermining their masculinity.

lusciouslips19 -> RE: Punishment in history (4/9/2008 1:04:57 PM)

Back then they also used to bore holes in peoples skulls to let the bad spirits out if they appeared insane.

Lordandmaster -> RE: Punishment in history (4/9/2008 1:06:35 PM)

Another common punishment was for the scold to be ducked.

Also for headaches, Insane people were also often chained up and in Bedlam 'middle class sane folks' paid to laugh at them, then it began to change when more understanding was developed about the nature of the mind, around the same time that punishment changed. Obviously now we see it as an illness not something to laugh at, but it does go hand in hand with the public nature of humilation.

Yup, one that I missed out though I do know there are in fact some dungeons that use ducking stools as part of play, they were designed to be disoriantating, actually they were terrifying and many drowned because of the constant immersion in water.

Great post.

I have read a litle about the history of torture and I share your interest in it.  It is amazing how the social collective mindset of torture changes depending on period and region.

shysub0951 -> RE: Punishment in history (4/9/2008 1:11:52 PM)

i agree that it is fascinating to see how those time periods did in some way or another incorporate BDSM into their punishments. i read about some of them in the England region and thank you for the site.

SeaDogret -> RE: Punishment in history (4/9/2008 1:12:15 PM)

Here in Florida, in Kissimmee,  Fl, just west of Orlando, there's a historical display of punishment and torture tools at Medieval Times show theater, really interesting, whips, gags, handcuffs really painful stuff displayed

colouredin -> RE: Punishment in history (4/9/2008 1:15:34 PM)

Its interesting in some towns and villages around Britain you can still see the reminants of these practices, most often in the form of whipping posts that are still erected, sometimes pillories though often they have been moved around.

Lordandmaster -> RE: Punishment in history (4/9/2008 1:16:25 PM)

I think it's the other way around: WE TODAY in the BDSM world are incorporating the methods of torture and punishment that various cultures have used throughout history.
