Chloelicious -> tips for job interview (4/9/2008 8:42:22 AM)

Hello people,

OK today I had an interview for a job, as always I think I did good impression but got to wait until end of the month to know what's the deal.

Do you have tips to give me, to pass the interview easily?
Do you prepare your "speech" while waiting in line ?
How?

Thank you alot for the help I'm sure you will provide me

Chloe

C'est quoi, comme job?

RCdc -> RE: tips for job interview (4/9/2008 9:00:39 AM)

This is Darcy

I'm no expert, but having been on both sides of the table, so to speak, I'd offer the following tips when you have an interview.

> always turn up ten minutes early, and never late.
> turn up well groomed and looking appropriately professional for the job you're interviewing for.
> use lots of eye contact, and do not cross your arms - it gives off the wrong signals
> try not to answer questions with a yes or no response - a good interviewer will ask open ended questions anyway, but not everyone who interviews is good at it.
> if you need to, take a moment to think about any answers - better that than blurting out the first thing that comes into your head.
> unless it is specifically brought up, don't ask about the pay/salary - if they want you then you can discuss this stuff then.
> never, ever bitch about your old job or boss, no matter how much you want to - it looks unprofessional.
> if asked about stengths and weaknesses, present a potential strength as a weakness - i.e. I can be a bit of a workaholic, or I sometimes pay too much attention to detail, or if the mood feels right in the interview, use humour - i.e. chocolate. :)
> do a little bit of research into the company that is interviewing you - employers like it when it's clear that you've taken time to actually find out something about the place you want to work at.
> at the end of the interview do thank them for their time and tell them that you look forward to hearing from them.

Hope this helps.

*hugs yummy Darcy*

Chloe.. I can only echo what Darcy said.... and add: within a week of the interview, send a polite note to the interviewer thanking them for their time.

pahunkboy -> RE: tips for job interview (4/9/2008 9:20:59 AM)

yes.  they always ask what your weakness is. dont bad mouth anyone even implied.

act like you have always belonged there.  they will ask where you want to be in 5 years.  [jobwise]

also- research the company. know MORE then the interviewer.  be candid but dont talk too too much.

tilt your head abit to denote you listen.

i would jot down a few highlights on a index card.

avoid cliches.

the intervewer wants to know that you can make the company money.    you are the long lost cousin who now has been found and completes the family.

Chloelicious -> RE: tips for job interview (4/9/2008 9:44:39 AM)

thank you Darcy, you have been very helpfull.

It is easier for me (as probably for  many people) to tell people strengths versus Weakness.

cjan -> RE: tips for job interview (4/9/2008 9:45:43 AM)

I also have experience on both sides of the interview desk. I think Darcy's advice is very good. I would just like to ad one thing, and I'm aware that this may apply only to me (as an interviewer) or to a minority of empployers. I'm not, of course, sure about that. When I interview someone for a job, besides the obvious questions of appropriate qualifications/experience, I like to chat and, perhaps, throw a change up pitch, something unexpected. My purpose is to try to understand what this person is really like outside of the formality of an intewrview process. Given the obvious limitations of a short interview, this is difficult to do but may give me an insight, or not.

What I am looking for is someone who is confident and comfortable with who he/she is. I value that quality highly. Many skills and procedures can be taught on the job. But a person is who he/she is. They will bring that to the work place and those qualities are hard, if not impossible to change. In a nutshell, my advice is to be yourself.Either you will be hired as such or not if the boss feels you won't "fit in". Better to know from the start than waste your precious time and find out that you are not accepted for who you are, imo.

Good luck, Chloe.

You might want to avoid asking "So, is this place kink friendly?"

SteelofUtah -> RE: tips for job interview (4/9/2008 10:01:52 AM)

As an Interviewer and former Management of a staff of nearly 200, I can tell you the following.

If you want to get the job make sure you do the following.

The Resume:

If you have them only use your MOST GLOWING Letter of recomendation and only at a job that you were at for more than 2 years. If it is less than that it will be belived you were friends with the person who wrote the letter and it will be ignored anyway.

All Resume with more than one page are Automatically Thrown out, by me anyway, In Management Training it is suggested as a sign that you will talk excessivly about yourself making you overly freindly with your co-workers meaning you will get less production out of them because they are talking more.

ONLY put the Information that is Pertinent to the Job you are applying for (When I am seeking employment I make a different resume for each place I apply at so that they only see that I am the PERFECT choice as all I am is what they are looking for)

You will USUALLY be asked to fill out an application they aren't always necessary some companies are legally required to have you fill out an application due to EOE, however most of the time the application is used to verify information on your resume make sure the date MATCH otherwise you will be considered a liar and not hired.

During the Application Process:

There are 4 hardball questions that get asked at nearly EVERY interview here they are.

  1. Why should we hire you?
  2. What are your 3 greatest strengths and what are you 3 greatest weaknesses?
  3. How do you deal with conflict in the work place?
  4. Why do you want to work here?

Now there are variations on thes questions as well as others that require the same kind of answer. If you say the words "I Don't Know" at all or "Ummm" more that three times. I threw your application away. Only YOU CAN know the answers to these questions. If you don't know then we can assume you are floating aty this point in your life and not going to stay for long nor be as productive as someone who does know.

To Question 1, ALWAYS state that it is because you are more driven than anyone else they will see today, that you are a harder worker, and/or that you will be a better asset to the company in the long run. THIS IS ABOUT BEING COCKY, Show them that you have drive to be the BEST that you can be and that they would be STUPID Not to hire you, just never say that. Also NO NEGATIVITY Never put people down in an interview it shows you are shallow and pety.

To Question 2, Your three strengths should always be related to WHAT THAT COMPANY DOES!!! and your three weaknesses should always be Positive things in disguise. Say things like you Can Obsess over a problem till you solve it or that You find you can be a little picky wanting to make sure things are perfect that failing is never an option for you. These Positive Weaknesses offer the employer little to fault you on.

To Question 3, The word EMPATHY is what the employer is working for, that you can put yourself in to someone elses shoes and STILL try to find a Respolution . Sympaty is a BAD word especailly in Customer Service Based Business even sympathetic comments like, I would feel bad for them, or I would be upset that they were angry would get you no further with me.

To Question 4, Career is the PERFECT word to use, explain that you are seeking a career and that you believe your skill would benifet the company just as much as thier experince in your chosen career field would help you. Under NO CIRCUMSTANCES should you NOT compliment the company in this situation, They want to know that you WANT to work for them not that you simply applied for a position.

Finally, many companies will hire you on the spot unless they are fielding for a professional for a position. If this is the case inform them that you will call back to see it any decisions have been made in 7 days time or at the first of the week following the interview.

MAKE SURE YOU GET

Hiring Managers Name
Interviewers Name
Company Name, Phone Number, and Address. (This you can get from the phone book)
PROPER Position Title

When you leave go home and write a letter thanking them for the time they took to interview you as well as a recap as to why you want to work for them and what your best qualifications were.

I have hired people who were not as qualified as others JUST because the mailed me a thank you letter. I was more willing to train someone who had DRIVE to work for me than I was someone who thought they had nothing left to learn about thier chosen profession.

Hope that helps.

If you want more Tips just Mail me on the other side.

pahunkboy -> RE: tips for job interview (4/9/2008 10:32:54 AM)

--I noticed- the "we will make a decission  in a week"  is bull.   what that means is they will mail you a we are sorry letter.

try this:

which day do you prefer me to start,  Wednesday the 5th, or Monday the 9th?

...the weakness question is a flawed one. no one is going to tell anyone, and the pos disquised as neg is a silly game.

"I am go glad to be here"   "where is the time clock"   "is this going to be my office"   "ill try not to make the others look slow/bad"

"that is a stunning outfit"  "I think we will order Chinese, what would you like"

i once ans the 5 yr question as tho it was a  personal question.  my reply was purely personal.

"I am so sorry I could not join you last year"  "we are wasting time, lets get me to work"

KatyLied -> RE: tips for job interview (4/9/2008 10:42:49 AM)

Send a thank you letter post-interview.  Do it within a few days time.
I always do this because on one occassion the competition was so tight that I won the job because I sent a thank you letter and the other person did not.

CalifChick -> RE: tips for job interview (4/9/2008 11:00:58 AM)

Sit forward in your chair during the interview, lean in a little.  You want to show you're interested.  If the chair has arms, you can lean a little on one arm with your forearm, it shows you relaxed but interested.

Don't wear anything that makes noise (jangly earrings, bracelets, etc.), don't wear perfume, and don't smoke before you go in, the smell will be on your clothes. Don't fidget.

And something I told a girl I was interviewing once, after she handed me a fresh copy of her resume (I had not asked for one), with a wedding photo stapled to it... a photo isn't necessary if it's not requested, and if one is, I would find or have a head shot taken, as a wedding photo doesn't give quite the impression you're hoping it will.  (for the record, she was 4 ft nothing, he was 6 ft 6 inches, and it was a cowboy themed wedding - while memorable, not the memory you want).

look up-all  the infractions of the place.  osha violations,  epa super fund sites, amount of toxins released.

tell workers they are fat, their hair is died, and they look MUCH older then they are.

smoke profusely -in between popping loud bubble  with gum.

limit cell phone calls to 5 minutes while at interview.

dress like madonna or cher.

put a handfull of pennies for good luck in all your pockets- throw then when you score a point.

page your self at interview.

send YOURSELF a thankyou note c/'o the widget company!

ask what the CEO compensation package is, and if it is tied to performamce

stand on your head and do cartwheels.  these places are impossible to please.....
