The technology revolution has transformed organizations across the private sector, but not ours, not fully, not yet. We are, as they say, tangled in our anchor chain. Our financial systems are decades old. According to some estimates, we cannot track $2.3 trillion in transactions. We cannot share information from floor to floor in this building because it's stored on dozens of technological systems that are inaccessible or incompatible.

Just last week President Bush announced, "my 2003 budget calls for more than $48 billion in new defense spending."

More money for the Pentagon, CBS News Correspondent Vince Gonzales reports, while its own auditors admit the military cannot account for 25 percent of what it spends.

"According to some estimates we cannot track $2.3 trillion in transactions," Rumsfeld admitted.

$2.3 trillion — that's $8,000 for every man, woman and child in America. To understand how the Pentagon can lose track of trillions, consider the case of one military accountant who tried to find out what happened to a mere $300 million.

"We know it's gone. But we don't know what they spent it on," said Jim Minnery, Defense Finance and Accounting Service.

Was 2003 last week in your neighborhood? The Rumsfeld quote is from 2001.

What should the counter point be; similar quotes regarding the spending on failed social or income/asset redistribution programs?

Assuming like all nonsensical, thinly disguised, political attacks this thread too will be moved with the other 'Random Stupidity'.

That's pure idiocy.

It's relevant in context. The sources are reputable. Are we not currently discussing the overall effects of staying in or leaving from Iraq? The economic impact is obviously critical. How is military spending irrelevant? I should think that the fact that they don't actually know what they do with their resources would be a point of much interest.

But if you want to go on talking about some bullshit ad hominem nonsense instead of focusing on meaningful issues, go right ahead.

Well Merc we have the first to protect all political speech regardless of if its an attack 4 years old or whatever.

The events listed have happened, both parties are guilty as sin of wasting our money like pouring water down the drain, and the 2.3 trillion was never investigated. It was just swept under the carpet. Dont you want to know how your money is being burned?

I want an investigation! I want my investment and my money accounted for. Like 911 it is an unresolved mystery that our government has conveniently swept under the carpet.

The "meaningful issue" is isolating one aspect to suit a political end versus encompassing the universal problem of government welfare. Using a quote from 2002 is totally irrelevant that context. Why not go back to FDR, or Nixon?

There is no hope as long as you push for agenda based debate.

According to a recent GAO report the 95% Pentagon projects are at a mimium 2 years behind in completion and about in the billions over their budgets. Further that many of the projects are weapons systems designed for the Cold War and can not be used in the current situation in the Iraq.
