Federal employees charged millions of dollars for Internet dating, tailor-made suits, lingerie, lavish dinners and other questionable expenses to their government credit cards over a 15-month period, congressional auditors say.

A report by the Government Accountability Office, obtained Tuesday by The Associated Press, examined spending controls across the federal government following reports of credit-card abuse at departments including Defense, Homeland Security and Veterans Affairs.

The review of card spending at more than a dozen departments from 2005 to 2006 found that nearly 41 percent of roughly $14 billion in credit-card purchases, whether legitimate or questionable, did not follow procedure — either because they were not properly authorized or they had not been signed for by an independent third party as called for in federal rules to deter fraud.

For purchases over $2,500, nearly half — or 48 percent — were unauthorized or improperly received.

Termyn8or -> RE: Our government at work (4/9/2008 9:27:02 AM)

Y'know it's a damn shame that things have gotten to the point where an issue like this is treated flippantly. That we have gotten so used to it.

Does anyone remember the house bank scandal years ago ? It made the major media. Almost every one of them was overdrawn. What would happen to us if we did that ? We would have to make the checks good, pay a bunch of fees and penalties and in some cases go to jail.

So whatever happened to them ? Never heard anything about that huh. Most likely nothing happened to them. I never even heard whether or not they were even made to pay their debts. I have a sneaking suspicion that NOTHING happened to them, it was all swept under the rug.

What odds would you figure that this is similarly dealt with. After all, what do they care ? it's not their money.

I am starting to take the opinion that there are two kinds of cynicism these days. One kind of cynicism is where one pokes fun at real life issues for a laugh, of course this can turn ugly at times if one is not careful. One of the best examples of what might be called "good" cynicism is George Carlin's piece "Rape Can Be Funny". Looking at the title you think once you see it you will want to rip his head off and shit down his neck, but once you watch it nothing could be farther from the truth.

Then there is another type of cynicism, the kind where we blow off all this kind of stuff because it is business as usual, and waste and corruption are expected. Or is that better termed apathy ?

It just rolls off our shoulders these days, it does not seem to matter. We are used to it.

Actually T, it’s not that I find the events to be a joke; just that I think we are long past recognizing we are off track from our motto, how it happened, and by whom.

Well, at least I am.

I’m just waiting for everyone to catch up, so we can work out what to do about it.

Termyn8or -> RE: Our government at work (4/9/2008 10:08:27 AM)

That's about where I am at charmd, and I have already explored the possibilities that might fix things. Nothing looks good at the moment. We already know that 80% of them should be shot at sunrise, but that particular sun is not going to rise anythime soon.

I have considered many different ways to bring pressure to bear but each of them requires solidarity of the people, which we lack.

A few flippant moments or sarcastic remarks might not be counterproductive, but when we get to talking about Peterbuilts, well, I dunno.

There was a time when theft of this magnitude, even on the smaller dollar amount scale of the past but proportionate to the era, would have people up in arms, literally. All of these state and local governments are "losing" money all over the place. It happened in Ohio and was partly responsible for the loss if a gubenetorial election by a formerly fairly well supported incumbent. But where is the money ? It is still gone. They never seem to find it.

Look at every story you have ever seen about any government "misplacing" money, then look for a followup with and explanation of where it was found and how it was recovered. I beg you to show me an example. You hear about them losing the money, and then you hear nothing.

Here is a prediction for the future, witness the death of this thread. OK, someone will find a link eventually and everybody will have their "proof". What will follow is opinion and conjecture I'd bet, because there will be no official followup.

But you see, in a short time they will lose a bunch of money somewhere else, and we will lap on that for awhile.

Perhaps I'll have to explain that. When I was young we got a puppy. This puppy had been starved, or at least not fed enough and would eat all of everything you put in front of him. Therefore he was not destined to be one that would have food available all day, plus there are some breeds that are just like that.

We would give him his food and water and randomly he would pick one, he would either drink all the water first and then eat all the food or vice versa, in record time I might add. It made him sick. He would throw up and if he does that, why feed him ? So we had to actually let him eat for a bit and then force him to drink. He did both very vigorously.

So they will manage to "push our head to a different bowl" in short order and the next scandal will run it's course, and then the next, and then the next.

Yes, the biggest problem I see as well.

Ah, common, T; I was just playin’. Besides, couldn’t it be considered satire? I just learned the concept the other day. :)

Yes, but me thinks it is time for a whole new tactic….

…and we must wait for our brethren to feel, they also, have had enough.

No, it is doubtful "slapping them around a little" would be productive. ;)
