Anyone see this documentary on the National Geographic Channel called "Earth: Population Zero?" It was pretty good. It asked the question of what would happen if humans suddenly disappeared from the Earth, for whatever reason.

We like to think it would be the end of the world, but it wouldn't be. Even if we destroyed ourselves with nuclear weapons, life would find a way to survive and in a few million years, the earth will be repopulated with life no matter what we do to it. And even oil and natural gas will be replenished.

When we talk about climate change, everyone talks about the end of the world. The earth would not end. In reality humans mean nothing to this planet. It could care less if we are here or not. If we disappear, the earth will simply reclaim our roads, buildings, and cities. Cement will crack open. Steel will rust. Vegitation will slowly creep inside our homes and tear them apart. Hurricanes, tornadoes, lightning, fire would all destroy vast developments. Buildings will fall. The earth will simply go on like it did the 4 billion years before we were here. Evolution will not skip a beat.

Here is a good vid from youtube of Charlton Heston reading an exerpt from the book, "Jurrassic Park" and it is dead on....

The earth has done this before. The earth has reset itself countless times....

Rats and cockroaches would mutate into "higher life forms" and have a gigantic war fought with cyborgs!

Actually (in learned tone) it would be the end of the world. World comes from "wer-alt" = the Age Of Man. No Man, no world. But the Earth would keep on going I'm sure.

I have never heard anyone say that climate change would end the world, people are saying we are destroying our own habitat and whether climate change is happening or not, we are still in the process of destroying our own habitat.

Whether the world is here or not, it matters little if you are dead, which is where I think sceptics like you onclimate change and habitat depletion get their position, when you are dead, nothing is your problem, it is the next generation's problem. Just how selfish can you get.

The sentiments in the Heston video are impeccable with one exception, the amount of time left for human life  to re emerge is not sufficient.

If it took as long as this time then the Sun would change dramatically before the hairy  upright bi pedallers were anywhere to be seen.

Earth would simply be restocked by our extraterrestrial friends with humans from off planet. It has happened before.

On that note, I'm going to smoke some weed, then go out for a beer, come back and have my overnight friend give me a BJ, then find a dark room to lay down in and take my tablets.

Let the gossip end!

To that purpose I so declare:

I am not an extraterrestrial.
Whether I am human or not depends on the definition of what human is.
I do am checking out the state of things down here.

Well some environmentalists claim we are destroying the planet. Even Al Gore thinks the planet is "running a fever."

Compare what we are doing to the history of the earth, in the grand scheme of things, we are nothing. The environment and ecosystems of the earth has been destroyed and rebuilt a countless number of times. Asteroids or comet impacts alone have led to massive extinctions of animals and destruction of habitats. One only has to look at volcanic eruptions to see this process in action. Volcanos destroy large pieces of the habitat. Yet, it doesnt take long for the earth to heal itself.

Now Im not saying pollution is OK or what we are doing is a good thing. My point is that even if the world is warming, whether naturally or man-caused, the world is not going to end. And this wont cause extinction of the human race either. Even going by the most severe of predictions, life will find a way to adapt and survive. Did you know 50 million years ago, tropical plants were growing in Alaska? The average temperature of the earth was an average 20 degrees hotter than it is today. Life still existed... Yet we are terrified at the fact that the world might have increased by 0.5 degrees in 150 years? And now scientists say that that number is actually not accurate anymore because of the cooler weather we have been having the past decade.
In fact, life perfers warmth. Plants will grow faster and more dense in warmer environments. Bacteria will spread faster in warmer, wet environments.

Remember the panic back in the 1970s about global cooling. People were coming up with outrageous ideas to try to melt ice at the polar caps. There was real terror among many scientists that we were entering a new ice age. And these are the same people screaming at the top of their lungs about global warming today. In reality we just dont know what the cycles of this planet are.

A "fever?"
We've had the coldest spring since I've been here.
I don't know how anyone could take Al Gore seriously.

Maybe it already is.  Cockroaches have been around thousands of years already.  They haven't evolved in any way other than their stomachs.  They can eat anything and thrive.

Those things have been around much longer than that...we have fossils that go back to the carboniferous period some 350 million years ago....even before the dinosaurs. Them damn things have survived everything.

I really enjoyed watching that last night.  We are mere vermin on the face of the globe.  Without our participation, the world would go on.  Well.. until it gets sucked into some vortex or something.

Yeah, we're going to starve ourselves growing biofuels like ethanol in our efforts to save the planet. We'll go without AC, forsake every fun activity like long drives and eating exotic foods... only to have a black hole destroy everything anyway. Or to have our own sun destroy us with a single hiccup.

We should be more like the fat smiling Bhudda, and enjoy every minute that we have. This planet won't last forever, regardless.

Not to worry.  I've got a spaceship ready for me and a select few hotties to escape in, and then to come back and repopulate the planet.  I'm accepting applicants now for a dry run.
