LadyEllen -> heads-up; Dispatches Ch4 8pm tonight (4/7/2008 7:56:10 AM)

being pretty sure it will come up here anyway and that there'll be a lot of useful stuff for future discussions, this is a heads up to Brits to watch tonight's Dispatches 8pm (9pm on Ch4+1). Its the first of a three part broadcast on "Immigration; The Inconvenient Truth" by the wonderful Rageh Omar. For overseas viewers, it should be on download from Channel 4 On Demand in short order too, I'd have thought.

In Brixton, South London, he meets Ricky, whose parents came over to Britain from Jamaica in the 1960s. His integration and sense of Britishness defies Powell's warnings of segregation of races but with his sense of patriotism comes criticism of the new wave of immigration. He complains to Omaar that Polish workers are undercutting his business and of encountering Eastern European immigrants who cannot speak English. Ricky's views are typical of the new immigration debate which goes beyond colour or race and is more focused on the economic repercussions.

I lived in Brixton for seven years; Ricky isn't representative.

What has how long you lived there got to do with what is representative today ? The show mentioned a government survey, that showed 40% of second and third generation Asian and AfroCaribbeans felt their jobs are threatened by Eastern Euoropeans. I would say 40%  is a pretty representative figure.

Ever notice that it's always the working classes who are affected by this stuff and not the upper classes?
I guess the working class is just supposed to "suck it up" while their wages decrease.
It's the same way here in the U.S. the working class is supposed to make all the sacrifices.
That shit can only go on for so long.

I havent got the faintest idea what the right honourable Rageh Omah concluded about the cultural scene in the UK and frankly I couldnt care less.

No doubt his conclusions were positive at the very time that a trial is ongoing in the UK of six little Muslims who wished to create havoc in the skies such as has never been seen before.ie place bombs on transatlantic aeroplanes.

Rageh is a Somalian immigrant to the UK and is almost by definition a member of the privileged castes who live in that God forsaken hell hole.
I say he should piss off back there toute de suite and help to solve the disastrous situation  that exists there.

Much easier to get  well paid job in the media and tell the Brits where we are going wrong.
Meanwhile in Somalia  the starvation murder and suffering increases exponentially. that means by leaps and bounds
Oh well it must be me because I am soooo wicked.

;m getting soooooo tired of the brain dead liberals on this site.

Popeye thats because its the upper classes wanting to allow cheap labour

Utter bull..... Did you watch the show ?  ( First of three parts )

Somehow i doubt it, judging by your post. You are right in one respect, Rageh Omar does have a wealthy family, he came here when he was 2  ( hes now 39 ) and went to Oxford, with a friend of mine. I have been told he is okay, and his show tonight seemed to have a reasonable balance.

seeksfemslave -> RE: heads-up; Dispatches Ch4 8pm tonight (4/8/2008 1:43:53 AM)

I admitted I didnt know what he had said.
The point is that conditions in Somalia need his attention.
After all, he is an Oxford graduate, he can do anything, isn't that true. ?

Have you not noticed how newsreporters from, say Asia, rarely comment negatively on the problems in Asia.
There are plenty by the way.
Trevor Phillips is as perfect an example as is possible to imagine and yes I know he is not from Asia but he definitely knows where the UK is going wrong, draws a 120K salary in order to tell us about it and will say what ever he believes is fashionable. Consistancy is of very little consequence.

How often do we see a programme explicitly blaming the nutty rulers for the starvation that exists in country X?
Look at the convoluted defences Mugabe is getting on the Zimbabwe thread.
The slant of most reporting on poverty abroad  is nearly always to try to induce guilt in the West for not supplying enough charity to these places..

What the Chinese need to do is get some reporters on the mainstream media
Then if the same pattern continues criticism of China would reduce.
In fact I sense a racist scandal here. Too few Chinese newsreaders on the BBC.
The weather forcasters are suspect too.

And some say I am a bigot and always negative.

Politesub53 -> RE: heads-up; Dispatches Ch4 8pm tonight (4/8/2008 1:50:23 AM)

Seeks, i dont understand how you can be critical, not knowing what was said. If he has lived here his whole life, except the first two years, why doesnt he have the right to make the show ?

seeksfemslave -> RE: heads-up; Dispatches Ch4 8pm tonight (4/8/2008 2:04:03 AM)

He does have the right.
I just believe he is addressing the wrong problem thassal.

Which do you think needs fixing first.?
Social difficulties in the West or social catastrophes in Africa?
Only arskin'

RealityLicks -> RE: heads-up; Dispatches Ch4 8pm tonight (4/8/2008 3:18:57 AM)

seeks you are totally right, why bother making a programme about somethng so minor as a "social difficulty"?  They do say some sad bastards are obsessed with it, you know.  The British public is much more concerned about what's happening in Africa and should see lots more of that on their screens.

It's a very middleclass liberal attitude to address an issue that doesn't require personal scarifice rather than put their money where their mouth is and fight for a cause that might require personal scarifice.

This to me is all that middleclass protesting about China is about, being right on without having to make personal scarifices.
