I could use some advice on which brands are the best PCs,best deals,ect.

I know you get what you pay for,but I`m in the 1000 dollar range.

Music and video are important.Games,not so much.

I`m also not interested in Vista,if that matters.

That might help, O. I have a HP Pavilion, about two and a half years now, works great, but it was a little over a grand.

I've had excellent experiences (3) buying laptops through the Dell Outlet (http://www.dell.com/content/topics/segtopic.aspx/help?c=us&cs=22&l=en&s=dfh).   Many come up throughout the week, and you can search and sort on various model criteria available (speed, memory, screen size, video card, etc.)  The last one I bought (was a return) that has 2GB of RAM, 160GB hard drive, 15.4" monitor, lots of upgrades and it was about $500.  Same warranty as buying it new.

I had a toshiba laptop and it was great.  My Sir uses both windows and mac so we got a macbook pro (laptop) for me to use.  He split the hard drive so i have both windows and mac. He's sooooooo good!

Hey, Owner59. I like the Acer products. I think they give you a lot of bang for the buck and a lot of choices for $1K and under. Of course, depending on the machine you choose, and your needs, you may want to upgrade the sound card and/or the graphics card. I also like the Logitech 5.1 speaker system I have for my desktop. I only play music on my desktop and the logitech speakers are sure to get the neighbors calling the cops if I crank it way up. I also like them because, if I don't want to disturb the neighbors and keep the volume down, they still give a  deep, rich sound. ( Damn, I miss living in the forest with no neighbors) So, I dunno, from personal experience, about speakers for laptop. But, again, imo, Logitech gives you a big bang for the buck.

I like to deal with Newegg,com for computer needs. I've done a number of transactions with them, all positive experiences . I also like their prices. Also, they post consumer comments for the products they sell. Handy.

Finally, you may want to check out PCworld .com for product reviews. They do good, unbiased. imo, research on products and make it easy to comparison shop. PCWorld will give you, also. a lot of techy and complete info on products they review.

I wouldn't get Visa at this time. Too many problems. Business buyers have bucked about buying new machines with Vista OS, so the MS Evil Empire ( the last I heard) caved and "allows" buyers to by new machines with the previous MS OS...duh, having an Alzheimers moment and can't remember what it's called.

I’ll leave the particular brand names and OS to the gurus here……My only advice to you is to purchase—the optional—three year extended warranty contract along with the unit -- because trust me….they tend to be a lot more fragile than a desktop.  

I purchased an HP about eighteen months ago…..and while it has preformed fairly well, both the AC unit and the DVD drive crapped out on me just recently.  

Anyways……a good friend of mine in the industry told me extended warranty contracts are a prudent choice when comes to laptops, HD TV’s and treadmills.

I've always had great luck with Dell, but next time I am gonna seriously look at HP and Toshiba. Oh yeah, and the Panasonic Toughbook intrigues me, since I've started using a laptop in the field and found it very effective.

I am also seriously considering a Mac. Surprising myself. It's just that I have to spend time dealing with antispyware, antivirus, anti-this, anti-that...if a Mac can spare me that, I'm interested. Not to mention that Vista OS.

i'm a die hard Mac person but - use PC's for work. last i heard, XP will be gone in June with the next major revision ( bug fixes) to Vista. look at what ever model pleases you - then figure out the cost of a video card upgrade - max out the memory - THEN make damn sure your hard drive spins at minimum 7200 RPM for flawless video and music playback...... or buy and external HD with that spec.

I would size up some models THEN go to a store and look at the models- to see what works for you. then order from here.

one can get a laptop for $600.  depending on your state- you might not have to pay sales tax this way.   whoopz

well last spring i was finally in the market for a laptop.most of where i went they all came with vista which is not something i want just yet. at the time i had barely gotten used to windows xp. none of the regular places had what i was looking for.i ended up going to the place where my parents get their pc fixed at(mom doesn't understand there are emails you just don't open). anyway, i talked to the guys there,a little neighborhood pc sales and repair place and they were able to provide me what i was looking for sicne my pc is mainly for email,music and gaming. i got a wonderful Dell Inspiron. it's last year's model but it works great for what it is and paid aourn $600 for it. and if you are looking for one that can take travel and such i found this one in particular to be great for that.it's been banged up a few times and still runs great.
