I can verify that, I signed up for AOL a couple of times for temporary internet access. Both times I called to cancel, they acted like they couldn't find my records, ignored anything I said, went on and on. Eventually, I started telling them to "fucking cancel my account right now, I don't give a fuck if your computer is messed up, if it's not cancelled today I will call back everyday and yell at whoever picks up the phone. (thirty minutes on the phone to cancel a 20.00 dollar a month bill). Oh, then he found my account like 30 seconds later. AOL, is even worse than Charter(they lie to), but no where near the insanity that is AOL.

AOL lies about computer problems when you call, they always have computer problems when you want to cancel, but never when you sign up. It's just a way to get you possibly off the phone, and you might forget about it for a few more months.

I'm pretty nice to phone people, as I've done that for a living for a while, but I don't tolerate lies, and ignoring my requests. It doesn't work very well for them.

oh hells bells i coulda told you that...i had friends that worked at the aol center here in jax before they shut it down.

not to mention the six or seven people who applied to work there and were NOT hired.  why?  various reasons....

you type too fast
you know too much about computers
you understand programming language
you understand how to troubleshoot

they didnt/dont want people who actually understand what they are doing, and dont just want to follow a script.

I had heard all the tales of problems with cancelling AOL.  I had no difficulty whatsoever, and the automatic billing stopped right on time.  The rep asked why I was cancelling, getting ready, no doubt, for the full routine.  I told him quite simply that I had gotten married, and my wife had won the argument over service provider.  A moment of dead silence, and then he told me my email address would remain intact and free and to have a nice day.

       Think he was married?

This is not unusual. Back in the day you could trust a big company, but no more. It is all part and parcel of the times in which we live.

I use AOL for mail and FTP only. I'll give them the ten bucks a month. If you ever want to cancel AOL, just report the credit card lost. The company issues a new one with a different number. Then they will be calling you, well maybe not but it will be up on your screen.

I am hip to the tricks, and I am hip to the PC crowd, and salesmen. OK we got forty grand in CC debt, but it is unsecured. Guy calls "You could lose your house". FYI the house is paid off and the CCs have nothing to do with it. If we decide to burn them we can, and there will be no problem. Basically this yahoo was saying that to save the house you need to mortgage it. Bullshit.

My house is secured and I will use their own methods against them, yes, I will. I am honest with my friends but when it comes to "them", well they are going to be sorry they ever met me. I don't know if I have revealed this as of yet but now is a good a time as any.

I am going to take them for a hundred grand with impunity. They were stupid to give me so much. I am not kidding and in a few years I will be sitting on quite a bit. Others lament over this, I laugh. My debt service is already a thousand a month, I don't care, in the end I will be ahead. Minus interest of course, but I only pay that now because it is in my best "interest" to do so. I can get about another fifty grand, and when the time draws near, that is what is going to happen.

Those MFs are smart, but they are not smarter than me. I have tax free income, or actually somebody else pays my taxes, that is in my contract. I take home what I demand and I could give a fuck about the rest. It amounts to almost thirty bucks an hour, but I take home what I have demanded for payment for my services.

You think they're fucking good you have never seen this Terminator in operation. I have gotten the home phone numbers of telemarketers, no shit. I can engage them so deeply that they think they are my friend.

Remember this folks, and this pertains to this subject because I believe that this thread is about manipulation. I want to say something. If you consider it a hijack fine, we can start a thread on it, but I will say one thing.

Advertising is for things that you do not need and would not sell on their own merit.

Bring that statement into the OT of this thread and you might find yourself asking "Just when haven't I been lied to ?".

I have this internal filter for people's words.be they in print or of mouth. It is called a BRAIN.

HA, I got a buddy who would rather work in a factory, but is now working for Direct TV. Sometimes I quiz him when we are sitting here bullshitting. I try to come up with the most outlandish things with which to challenge him. I am sure he is not happy answering a phone all day, he has an olady. Maybe he just took that job because they require him to turn his cellphone off there. Think I am kidding ? Nope. (well he needs money too)

They all lie and they all cheat. The only difference between me and yall is that I REALLY have been there and done that, on so many levels. I have been taught since the 70s how to see a scam, anfd also how to run one. The world is lucky  I decided not to, because if I did, I would own CM, the internet and Al Gore, and a good piece of Bill Gates.

If I threw morality out the window, folks, I would be a millionaire within a month. These people got nothing on me, I just refuse to play their game.

Know what it is ? I don't want money. It doesn't taste good and if you sew it together and wear it if you get robbed you are naked. Get me ? And every day a dollar sits in your wallet it is worth a bit less. Who the fuck wants that ?

How did we get here ? Damn.

I see it, and I hope you understand what I mean. Even if they read a script, that script is written by people who know what they are doing. And while the stated goal is to satisfy the customer, the real goal is to just get you off their back.  None of them can fix software problems, tell you how to setup a router with a PC running Win 95, they might not even know Linux exists. Different browser? Call someone else. It is not in the script.

In closing I would like to mention something, but I will do it in the form of a question.

Who caused this situation ? Was it the commoner like most of us, or was it the elite ? Who decided that it was cheaper to call India than to call someone in the same country ? Who was it ? Wasn't me.

T,  on the cc cancelation.  I did this- this past time, the clerk told me she could NOT guarantee that the charge would not "find" the new number.

next- if a cc detects a run up, they now a reducing the limit.  EVERY transaction is viewed as suspect these days.

True on that big companies used to be best.  90% play ball this same way now.  I could not escape dish network, or att cell phone. biz today is all scammerizing.   i flat out told then i am too stupid to work the voice menu.

You'd think anyway right?  Actually it is free.  I keep an aol account so I can get large files and not have to download them onto my own pc unless I decide I want to.  It has worked well for me over the last 20 year's or so.

Anyway I went to the free account when it was offered as well.  Late last year we bought a new pc for the business.  Vista.  AOL claims it has software for vista but it does not.  It will not work.  Doesn't matter what version you have of the AOL for Vista either it does not and will not work.
So, I saw one of those disks at the grocery store about a month ago.  It also claimed it would work with Vista..and thinking well who knows maybe I keep getting something corrupted online downloading it?
Tried to load it...it would not install unless I signed up for AOL at 29.95 a month.
So, is AOL free now?  Clearly I am still using webmail for AOL at this point.  We do have a couple of computers in the house running XP pro so I still have a working aol program.

I had the same problems with AOL over here.

Eventually I wrote a letter to their registered head office telling them I wished to cancel.

Trying to do so by phone was a waste of time. When I cancelled the direct debit, I had recovery agents and threats of court action, even though I'd told them on the phone I was cancelling my subscription.

But they have to deal with correspondence to their registered head office. Anyone having trouble with AOL in UK, Google "Companies House" and enter AOL to get their office address.

early AOL made windows 3.1 so that no other ISP could work. A buddy has always had AOL.   he is helpless when i tell him to use the browser -type in adress. AOL make you look at what THEY want you to look at.

tho for a while AOL had the HOTTEST chat rooms found anywhere!!
