Status: offline 		Planning to take beth for a recovery trip to New Orleans. Tentative plans call for being there April 16-20th. I've been there quite a few times, but not since Katrina; this will be the first time for beth.

Ideally I want to get her one of the rooms with a balcony overlooking one of the streets of the Mardi Gras parades. I want to toss some beads and, knowing beth, she'll want to earn some.

Before Katrina, most every weekend had a little bit of 'Mardi Gras' celebration. I was wondering how things are now.

I've been looking into either the Royal Sonesta or the Omni Royal. Those are the two I know has balcony rooms. If anyone has any other hotel suggestions I'd love to have them.

I'm sure much has changed. My last trip was before casinos! I'm hoping the Pat O'Brien's still has the dueling piano bar. I plan on taking her on the cable car ride to the 'Garden District'; but if anyone has any insight about what not to miss with a first time visitor please let me know. Would especially appreciate any good restaurant and club recommendations.

Status: offline 		Come on down!  The only thing you will see is a little less tourism and an odd national guard presence at times.  I'm not sure if the street car goes all the way to the zoo yet or not, but take the street car as far as it will go and back and stop at the aquarium.  From there you can take a round trip boat ride on the river to the zoo.  I think the boat leaves every hour in each direction.  As far as hotels, I prefer the smaller ones but each choice you mentioned is fine.  If you want something truly unique try the Napolean House but it stays faily booked.  Another choice in the quarter but closer to where the locals hang out in the Hotel De La Monnaie. It's just off of Decautur on Esplande which is at the quarter end of the street car line.  Oh and don't forget a trip to Second Skin ;)

Status: offline 		I've been to NO in the last year. The French Quarter is effectively back to normal, a little less crowded but otherwise just about the same.

It's kind of a tourist trap but Acme is still really good for oysters and po boys. If you've got money to burn Emeril's is worth a try although if its just basic cajun you're after there are plenty of good places. Asking the hotel staff for a recommendation for a place the locals like usually works for me.

wehn you go be sure you catch these cats.. and request the song "Kiss my ass baby" http://www.allpurposeblues.com/  if you dont hear them play it.. but you prob. will.

Pat O'Briens is still doing lots of Biz. Stay away from the Crawfish Etouffee there though... (icky! and I got the worlds worst case of food posioning from thiers)

Ya gotta have a huricane from O'Briens! ( get a glass or two of course! )

Take picts! and have fun!

Le Richelieu
Hotel Monteleone
Hotel St Marie French Quarter
Soniat House
Maison Dupuy
Omni Royal

And you MUST eat at Antoine's! Though, it is difficult to get a bad meal in NewOrleans.

Then, a pleasant morning can be had eating beignets and drinking cafe au lait at Cafe du Monde

There is also a great old cafe in the warehouse district with awsome breakfasts........I am just struggling to remember the name of it.

Now I want to cry. I adore NewOrleans. I would live there if I could.

That's where Daddy and I met for the first time.  We stayed on the 33rd floor of the Sheraton.  No balcony but an amazing view none the less.  We also bought a whip from the man who operates one of the BDSM dungeons.  I wish I could remember the name....I'll ask Sir later.  I'm so excited for you!!!

I took a stroll by the river the next day with the worst hangover ever, some lady told me i had to pay a ten dollar fine for looking miserable in New Orleans ( it was for charity ) and i got a baseball cap for my troubles.

Booked into the Omni, nice suite w/balcony. Had the concierge set us up for dinner at Antoine's (Thanks Tigresse for reminding me of that!) Café du Monde is on the 'to do' list. If you think of any of those warehouse district places let us know.

I'm sure there will be plenty of pictures. You know how beth is... 

Keep those suggestions coming regarding dinning, clubs, and/or other 'hot spots'. And if anyone is in the neighborhood - contact us on the other side and maybe will share a beignet or two.

Sanity-It is NOT going to rain that week.

And do watch the skies! Have a great trip and be very careful, especially if you're drinking. When I was there almost thirty years ago there were some really dangerous streets right on the beaten path, and I doubt its gotten better.

Status: offline 		Is Central Grocery still there? Kinda near Cafe du Monde.  It was a small grocery with a deli and sandwich counter. We used to go there for lunch, for enormous muffaletta sandwiches.

Forgot all about the prospect of rain regarding planning a trip. Living in LA for 6 years does that to you. April in New Orleans - I'm glad you reminded me to pack an umbrella. I'll have to shake the dust off of one and stuff it in the suitcase. I'll have plenty of room since beth's foot issue will eliminate the extra trunk usually needed for her footwear. 

Usually there are easier targets then me on the streets but I appreciate your advice. N.O. was always a place where it paid to be careful. I'm sure you are right and it's not changed for the better.  I'm glad beth's will be there to protect me. she can kick them with her hard plastic foot cast boot.

They'll charge you $20 to tell you "on your feet"!

Appreciate the advice!

However, having lived and worked in and around NYC for the first 45 years of my life; there would be a better chance being sold  a voodoo spell before falling for something like that.
Also, there something to be said for resembling 'Tony Soprano'.  Come to think of it, I've used, and live up to most Italian stererotypes...Just kidding! I don't know anyone involved with the Mothers And Fathers Italian Association.

Just got the good news that our outbound flight had upgrades available so we'll be arriving 1st class. We hope to be at Pat O'Brien's sitting in the dueling piano room having one of their fine mint juleps by 9:00 PM tomorrow!

Trying to set an over/under number for how many sets of beads beth  collects between tomorrow and Sunday.

My name is Cherry, I'm a life long resident of New Orleans and something of an expert on the city - working in the tourism industry in the Vieux Carré (what you Americans call the French Quarter). I stayed during Katrina and am still trying to rebuild my house (9 feet of salt water for 3 weeks).
 
I'm pretty good at where to stay, where to eat and what to do. The Quarter and the uptown Garden District (where the streetcar is) got NO water or flooding at all and the Quarter hardly missed a beat.  I know at lot about the history, voodoo and all that jazz.
 
I kinda know the underground scene but since I'm more into girlie stuff I'm probably better at telling you to get the a sale on the sexiest heels in town. New Orleans, and especially the Quater, have always been a lazzier faire bohemian zone. You can pretty much do, or be, any anything you want so long as you are not harming anyone or anything.  Most of what goes on is private, and done by out-of-towners. You know, you love to come here and do things you wouldn't be caught dead doing at home!  The fetish balls have suffered from a lack of visitors post-Katrina, but are on the mend.
 
There are still plenty of "speciality" or "no-tell" bed and breakfast places in, and near the Quarter. Many have balconies. They don't have a bar or restaurant, but with two restaurants and four bars on every block, so what? The makeover salons, the lingerie and toy shops, the kink stores, the bars with the back rooms, the costumes, the flamboyant excentic crowd, the fabulose black trannsexuals are all back. The humm and buzz of this unique city are coming back.
 
So, anyway, if you have an questions about New Orleans, try me. I might be able to help, or give you some good ideas. 
 
And, if you're Female ... by all means ... consider me your girl in New Orleans!
