Well, as abird pointed out, they won't be implanted into a woman's womb, so they won't ever reach that stage.  We tend to be a secular bunch over here but I sometimes think that we are a bit lost on issues of ethics.  We lack the certitude of the faith communities on these types of issues.  On the other hand, it means fewer of us believe in Hell - could be that's significant too, eh? 

It's interesting that not many posters thought that there was an essential quality to human embryonic life that differentiated it from an animals because I'm not at all sure the "value" of human agency depends entirely on belief in the soul.
