Status: offline 		Since those in the lifestyle seem to care more than others, I thought I'd share a couple links and see if a bunch of you can sponsor some of these birds like I did. 
It's the largest Parrot and Exotic Bird Rescue / Santuary in America with over 1200 birds, some of which are on the Endangered list. 100% of donations go into the operation (no salaries like other "charities")  all volunteer staff and they work with local disadvantaged youth. Birds can be adopted but only in person - they don't sell or ship birds.

The website is Feathered Friends Forever dot ORG  (add www and remove spaces, you know what to do) 
There's a great video on YouTube if you search  Rescued and Loved you can see the Founder and some of the special birds. 
Share these links with your friends and visit the Rescue if you're in the area.

Status: offline 		I think these are great organizations, fastination.  I used to follow a local one in New Jersey when I lived there.  I would love to adopt a bird-in-need, but the adoption fees for these organizations are so high!  Some of the bigger birds like macaws and cockatoos are hundreds or even over $1000 to adopt!  I understand they have costs of upkeep and vet bills, but a lot of people who would make good bird owners (like me!) just can't fork down several hundred dollars out of the blue to adopt one.

I also understand that charging a fee as they do helps to insure the quality of the potential owner.  But a lot of us just can't manage it.

Status: offline 		I have a parrot.  He is just now allowing me to be sorta near him. He is delighted to get peanuts in the shell.  He tries to talk.  I seen the neighbor kid plays peek a boo with him thru the window.  Parrots will go to the highest surface to purch.  When they stand on one leg they are relaxed.  Amazing they stand on those skinny legs for 75 years.  Too bad everything isnt made that quality!

He tries to tell me how is day is.  Funny when music comes on, like the NPR all things considerred theme, he cackles loudly to catch up with  the music.

he loves to see himself in the mirror. he can watch himself for hours and be mesmerised.  how many humans can do that?

poor thing-  screams  for a female parrot- and none comes.  I dont know how it would fly into the cage, but he wishes and calls for his dream mate.

maybe his mirror is my version of the internet.

Status: offline 		My grey is a rescue that I got when he was TWO.  I am his fourth human, if you count his breeder.  Thankfully he is a domestically bred birdie and I don't have to worry about the health issues of wild caught birds.

I love my little featherhead, even though he has destroyed my bedspread, at least one handbag, and just a whole list of other stuff....birds will be birds.

Status: offline 		In London parks, you get flocks of parakeets which are apparently descended from domestic pets which escaped their owners.  Its not exactly a tropical climate here but they seem to thrive.  Its an arresting but pleasant sight, a bunch of bright yellow birds on the wing in suburban London...

Status: offline 		I had forgotten about the wild parakeets in this country. I saw a nature programme that showed several large trees which, all together, housed thousands of these parakeets. It was an amazing sight watching them taking off.

Status: offline 		I hope, one day in the not too distant future, to have another parrot. I've previously had two rescued african greys, and also three cockatiels. I support a local (to the UK) parrot sanctuary (they also will take in other creatures which have been ill-treated/abandoned, etc... which is called the Brindle Animal Sanctuary and it's situated in Arundel. What I love about them is that the lady that runs it, with her partner, will allow people to go and sit in the parrot rooms, which basically are huge rooms in their house that have been converted into homes for the parrots. The parrots that have been traumatised by their past experiences are kept separated and only recently did a parrot called 'The Major', who was very badly treated/neglected and who plucked until he was bald/sore and severely mistrustful of people, actually go up to the owner of the sanctuary and nuzzle her, to her surprise.

My male cat had a special friendship with all of my previous birds, but especially Georgie, a female cockatiel who was such a cantankerous old wotsit and who chewed up just about every piece of leather strap/item of clothing/wristwatch strap lol They'd sit sit on a chair together and preen one another, she'd pick through his whiskers and general fur on his head/face, while he dutifully washed her. I could trust him implicitly with the birds.

I have some American friends and will pass along the urls for the websites you mention.

Status: offline 		I had doves as a child. Two white ones. Parrots and the larger breed birds kind of scare Me...I dont know why, but they do...Ive never had one. But I wouldnt mind it.

Im honestly more of a dog person tho. Pits to be specific...and its the same with rescuing one of them, you have to pay hundreds of dollars for the "rehoming" fees or what have you that people come up with.  I can understand the need to be reimbursed for the cash spent on a vet bill tho, it gets pricey.

Mine is an african greym  12 yrs old - given to me by a workmate who had had her for 10 years and wasn't spending enough time with her/ I also have 2 greencheeked conures and a budgie - all rescue birds.  I'd love to get another grey, but space and availability precludes it.

He was not asking for anyone to adopt but to sponsor a bird , which is totally different

he means to donate a few dollars to help care for a bird in the sanctuary as there will be some birds that will require extensive vet work or they  have birds that are unadoptable   and the donation helps to go toward feeding, housing and vet costs

Status: offline 		I just knew our little community would help out!  You can sponsor on line via PayPal, and you can add the Rescue to your Ebay profile under Charitable Donations or such.  I've got a pair of cockatiels in the house who are a blast. They have their chew toys but have "antiqued" some of the cabinet trim in the kitchen.

So now what I need to find for them is a nice submissive who likes birds........ and me.

If you can't manage adoption fees of a few hundred dollars, then you aren't in position to own any pet responsibly. Like children they have needs.

We got one parrot in whose owner decided she didn't want to pay the vet so the bird got worse and worse. When he finally got to FFF there was nothing anyone could do for him except proper food, water, meds and make him comfortable. He didn't make it. The lady simply shrugged it off when told.

People like that are why adoption rules and fees are in place, and why education should be mandatory before getting pets or children.

Teh Kittehs are territorial, and while I know a JeddieBrrrrd is capable of taking care of itself, I dont want to cause undue stress to a brrrrrrdie.

*sigh*

and much as I would LOVE to sponsor a bird, there are Greyhounds (and other breeds), Big Cats (and domestic breeds), as well as countless other rescue/humane/foster orgs that could use the money I earn (and much to my dismay) canot afford to spend on anything other than my existing costs of living.

There is no way I could choose (finances allowing) one of these worthy causes over another.

I donated $10.00 to SPCA, once.... 20 yrs later, I STILL get address labels, etc.

sorry folks.. guilt trips aint working, when I have my own furbabies to care for.

ok..sleepy.. stopping now before I get on some rambly soapbox that doesnt even make sense to me!!


*wanders back to the next level down, where my idiotic (or not?) rambles will be less... rambly? silly? senseless? fuckifIknow..
