A CM friend sent me this and I think it is so incredible and beautiful, wanted to share! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_LHoyB81LnE&feature=email I googled more about it and these elephants are mostly in Thailand, and their paintings are gorgeous. I would love to own a painting doen by an elephant.

We always take it for granted that there are no species on this earth that have as much sentience as our own. Yet I don't see any other species running around commiting genocide. Elephants live 50 years or so, and I suspect they're higher up on the karmic chain.

Uh-oh, all those rock and cave carvings and paintings were not done by humans, but by elephants! If I had not seen the elephant in the clip occasionally, I would not have believed it! What fine control and purpose and artistry! Or is it simply a task that they have been trained to perform? (The way of drawing is very human-like.) (Can elephants see in color?)

I was fascinated at the human like control of the elephant's trunk. You can almost see the hand griping the brush. In our digital age, never believe what you see on film.

Give any thing the tools, we would be surprised what could be achieved. After all, elephants have a larger brain than us, it can't be just thinking about the mundanes of life. Maybe the only difference between us and non human creatures is that we are able to manufacture tools for our expression.

To believe these paintings are actually being done by elephants one would actually have to believe elephants have the same perception of the world as humans. Hardly likely.

One of my ex's has a sister who manages one of the Ringling Bros. shows -- thankfully he and I are still on good terms because I get all sorts of perks when the circus comes to town! Last time it came by my location I got to go backstage to meet the performers and the animals, including an elephant who paints BEAUTIFUL pictures. I'd frame it and hang it in my living room. I used to think elephants were wretched, smelly creatures until that moment when I saw her happily dipping her paintbrush in the different colors of paint and I swear she was actually pondering what to do next on the canvas. It's cute, too, when they give her rewards. Apparently they love bread, but to feed an elephant a bread snack you basically unwrap a whole loaf of bread and give it to her!

That poor, poor elephant. He obviously has body dysmorphic disorder. One can clearly see that he is not nearly as skinny as he sees himself. Plus that focus on the butt leads one to believe that he's heavily into anal. Many, many issues going on in that brain.

We used to have a painting elephant at the Alaska Zoo. Thankfully she was recently sent to California, where she will have a much better life (warm and other elephants to socialise with). She can play the Harmonica also.

~~fr~~ Alright...thats not funny!! It was not an elephant..it was me when i was 9 months pregnant and i was just trying to finish the nursery so that we had a place to put the kid and i now i feel bad that you are laughing...uh......oh...just watched the clip...oops....never mind.

I think it the height of arrogance to think we are the only species who sees the natural world and has an appreciation for it. Even if it is a "learned behavor" so can we debate that our writing, typing, drawing and anything else we do as human animals is a learned behavor. Our parents taught us. We learned it. We didnt spout fully formed with the knowledge of "how to". I love the fact that someone thought outside of the box enough to let the elephants paint. When you honestly think about it we are not the only species that uses tools either. Some animals have developed cultures. http://news.nationalgeographic.com/news/2005/06/0607_050607_dolphin_tools.html Here the Dolphins teach thier daughters how to use a sponge on the end of thier bottle nose to keep from being stung.. and to help find fish on the sea floor. Chimps and baboons use tools. Otters use tools to break open clams. I do not discount them because they didnt go to Sears and slap down thier credit card for a craftsman's set. They might not be the same or "equal"... but I think they deserve respect for thier families and communites they have. We are all connected.. and we are just one more animal on this planet. With all of this being said I still get a kick out of Dennis Leary's rant on Meat.... and the "Animal Audtions" http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZN8Ne2_D_DQ Gwyn, I love animals.. all of them.. but If I am hungry.. and my family is starving... I will be the first mofo out there with my bow and arrows. (Thank gods we have 24 hr Wal-marts eh?)

I googled some more about it and there are many painting elephants. Mostly in Thailand I think. Hardly likely. So, meatcleaver you dont think that is an elephant painting in the video? You can buy a painting done by an elephant for well under 500 not for profit dollars. Some of them are so very beautiful. I am a believer that animals have much more developed sense of perception of the world than we humans do these days.

Something that many humans aspire to through various parctices such as meditation. As humans we are at a disadvatage regarding this due to our concepts of self and other.
