This is a dangerous idea.   How soon  till one applies brakes, and error 404 comes up?

2. there are so many other things that can stop a car  from functioning.  it does not need to be more like a computer.

Brakes are hydraulic.

ABS is electronic. But the principle can be applied to throttle-by-wire or electronic steering assist as well... any of 'em will kill you in the right circumstances.

Carburators and breaker points FTW!

This isn't really new.  I hadn't used credit for anything in years.  When I bought a car on payments to start building the score up to buy a house, one of these doohickeys was under the steering column.  Once we were approved for the mortgage, it was out in five minutes after I paid off the car.

Makes things hard for those who want to finance a car on a stolen identity, too.

If ABS dies the brakes well keep on functioning.
Electronic throttle is a bitch :) Especially when you can remap the engine, I did a mean prank on my friends Audi :)

It would seem to me that such a device would be easy to bypass, disable or remove completely.    After all, it -is- something added to an already working machine.  What would prevent someone from removing the device in order to keep the car functioning?

Guy from Poland told something interesting. He works in electronics and so does his brother, who came here much later.

His brother started a security company there that put GPS tracking devices in cars that had loans out on them. The business was successful and I don't know why he decided to come here. Whatever. But I was also told that this business was successful because alot of people run game in Poland.

Two people who know each other buy cars, and trade. They live way on the other side of town, work at a totally different place, so that keeps the car from getting repoed. They can't find it.

But they did not beep or disable the car, just found it. So the car went across town, the repo man went across town. Or maybe they got a network.

Maybe I should stop before we get to the conspiracy theories. Oops, hypotheses.

Hm. i'll have to look at that one of these days... finally have a car with ABS, and it has a warranty so i haven't really messed with it. i work with computers all day, so i prefer to keep them the hell away from my vehicles. If throttle-by-wire ever becomes mandatory, i'll be pedalling!

I equate measures like this to a modern day debtors prison, ala Charles Dickens, Victorian era, London circa 1840's. Read Dickens - see the parallels.

They want your money - And boy they're gonna get it.

What's wrong with it?  If you can't make the payments, don't buy the car.  Its really not that hard to figure out.

Heh....Maybe by the end of this evolutionary cycle, all rental homes and apartment dwellings will be equipped with similar type ''creditor-control'' gadgets placed at all exterior points of entry.....

Back in the eighties the gold coast apartments had keys, very wierd looking keys, that of course were not duplicable and had a significant deposit. But they had the ability to disable one, just one, of these keys.

Now you just get a key card. Those are alot better, when you are not in good graces they could let you in, but summon the police or notify a process server, things like that. All in your best interest y'understand.

But let's be straight, if I am getting sued I want to know it. I don't care if you killed somebody, you still fight it. You can't ignore it. But when you get to the point where they always know when you are home, how many stweps is it from having a warrant check before being allowed to enter your apartment ?

Just how long do you think that will take. Notice I said will.

They already have the technology in cars..at least the newer ones.  My car I bought this year came standard with onstar.  I get an e-mail to tell me when I need an oil change.
If I need air in my tires..etc.

They could easily disable the car if they wanted to.  After all it has GPS to tell the repo man just where to find it..etc.

Is it a violation of our rights?

Are you didding me conputers is the best thing that has happened to cars.
Superior handling, traction smooth power delivery etc etc.,,
Untill it goes wrong. Ie a 20$ sensor on a Mazda milenia fails it is part of traction controls so the computer always thinks that the car is spinning out and drastically reduced power, car almost undrivable.
But...  if you just hook up a diagnostic system it will tell you whats wrong replace the sensor and move on.
