Dith Pran, the Cambodian-born journalist whose harrowing tale of enslavement and eventual escape from that country's murderous Khmer Rouge revolutionaries in 1979 became the subject of the award-winning film "The Killing Fields," died Sunday, his former colleague said.

Dith, 65, died at a New Jersey hospital Sunday morning of pancreatic cancer, according to Sydney Schanberg, his former colleague at The New York Times. Dith had been diagnosed almost three months ago.

Dith was working as an interpreter and assistant for Schanberg in Phnom Penh, the Cambodian capital, when the Vietnam War reached its chaotic end in April 1975 and both countries were taken over by Communist forces.

i still remember that movie...and i watched it when i was maybe...10???   Something like that.  It scared me, it changed me...i didn't realize man could be so cruel to fellow human beings...and for political reasons?  i still think senseless wars and cruelty beget the same...a vicious cycle.
....May he rest in peace.

Socialists stamping out Capitalism, is what that was all about. Capitalism is the natural way people have eveolved to  deal with each other, and so to impose something as unnatural as Socialism / Communism (to enforce it) extreme Leftists have to resort to those sorts of methods. There is no religion among the far left, so there are no pesky morals getting in the way... and history has displayed that exact sort of behavior on the part of the far left again and again and again.

It's insanity.

my late husband was a Vietnam vet. He was watching this movie (i couldn't,,,too graphic) and i heard him whisper "i was there". That night he had the worst PTSD flashback i have ever witnessed.

i think extremism on either side has disastrous results.  Whether  the Khmer Rouge or Fascists...pushing ideologies...(even religion) causes men to become something at the most base level and forget that we are all human beings with an intrinsic value despite our differences in opinion.

I agree, whether far left or far right. Except I don't hate the religious for the sake of hating the religious. Or anyone else for that matter... I think a diversity of opinions is invaluable, and who am I to decide for everyone else what they may or may not believe. Even the Khmer Rouge, so long as they're not enforcing their idealogy at the end of their machete or their kalishnikov
