I thought to myself that we all have more power over our own lives than we probably realise.

It depends on the individual. The opposite could be argued. How many people realise the power of propaganda and advertising? I'm only aware of it because I studied propaganda as part of a history degree, and studied advertising as part of an accountancy qualification. If these opportunities had passed me by, I'd be blissfully unaware of the power of media. I'd estimate that many are wandering 'round completely oblivious to these avenues of social control.

Of course you are. You have a bargaining tool.

After reading lusciouslips posts for as long as i have been a member of Collarme, i would have to say her power begins with her intelligence. No bargaining there.

True enough. Power is constructed in the relationship between individuals.

First thing I thought of was of a power cut. God forbid, I need my leccy.

Don't fret, Kittin love, I've heard God is a spiteful individual, but he isn't going to turn the lights off on the world just to deprive you of your leccy.......there's something about this in post 19.

We all have far, far less of it than we think we do. And we all find that out, one day or another.

LOL dang that's exactly what I was going to say.

And personal power can NOT be "transferred"

And we have even less control than we have power

Power

What a wonderful word.

Any thoughts?

Good word.

Chocolate, however, is a vastly better word.

'Outstanding word, but better is open to interpretation, I'm afraid. I wouldn't necessarily decry the usefulness of the word chocolate; in fact, I positively encourage its use. I prefer the word verbosity, though, which is apt I suppose.

Any other words you deem to be vastly better.... fish, cake, leaf perhaps?

Just in passing, it's not quite fair to throw Mustafa Kemal in there with Pol Pot and Hitler.

The most interesting thing about that list is the origin of the meglomaniacs: no representatives from England, France or United States.

Meglomaniacs, quite possibly. But, what about the millions of people who have held power but haven't made your list? and were those in the list driven by absolutism rather than power? To illustrate, Pol Pot was a slave to an absolute; that being, Cambodians could not possibly be free in a bourgeois-led society.

Sure....The free-flowing glacial melt that bombards the narrow, isolated river canyons of the Stikine, Alsek and Susitna rivers during peak melt.

On a more simplistic note.... The metallic clanking noise three forty-five pounders and a ''dime'' make as they're being repped out. For me, that always trumps the notion of ''power'' some pot-bellied geek with fake alligator shoes and a CEO title represents. ; }

Hold on.

"change the world"    or  is it "is that all there is, "

Much of the world works just fine...   for those on the Internet I mean.  Yes we rant...but if you have electricity - likley you have heat and basic needs met.

If you "require" more then that,  then  that quest risks being selfish and not geared toward the greater good.

Now power vs leadership-are 2 separate things.

People on CM, do not automatically buy the matra that the west can do no wrong.  that the grid is essense is flawed, tho it is what we have to work with.

Power is the ability to apply force.

Power corrupts but more often it is merely attracting the all ready corrupted.

Power is a narcotic.

All of us have more power than we realize but, because change is the only constant in the universe, all power is temporary and therefore, ultimately, an illusion.
