I just wanted to post this.  It's a really horrific story and one I relate to after being singled out in the past.
Whilst it is (unfortunately) to be expected to be noticed if you do not conform, it should not be expected to mean the loss of a life.  And please, I am making a request to anyone who decides to answer or post on this thread for the sake of Sophie Lancasters memory, so this post isn't removed, please don't get into a discussion of the age of the attackers at the time of her murder.

Thanks for this. It's been hard to follow the happenings in this case from here.

The article is unclear on the status of the other 3 attackers,  were they convicted as well?

Very sad. What a horribe thing for all parents involved. Loss of life because of ignorance is just so heart wrenching.

Such a tragic death for one so young.  [:o]
 
There is another linked article discussing the possibility of having these kind of attacks classified as "hate crimes".  And a park bench for the victim is now at the scene of the murder as a public memorial.

I just saw the article on the bbc news, and it reported that two were convicted and three others were mentioned, but due to restrictions no reports.  I am sure more will come out tomorrow and if it does, Ill post it.
 
Hi faery.  The conviction only happened today and I do know there was a report on here months back when it occured, but I did a search and it never came up, so if you have a link to the original report, I would be grateful if you can post it.

Attacking one of another youth culture is about hate, attacking is a crime, so why should it not be labelled a hate crime.

A murderer is a murderer, regardless of age. I think they should suffer the same fate, the same way.

In the area that we live in My 12 year old is constantly called Goth and because she has many female friends, and is close with them, she is called a lesbian as well.

Again, just as with the other board I posted on this evening, ignorance out of fear is never acceptable. I can not imagine what this girls family is going thru. I must say as well I am very shocked that this happened in England, which is generally very tolerant of what would be considered "alternative" life style choices.

I worry about My daughter...

Something is amiss in Britain with all these teenage on teenage murders that have been happening the last couple of years. I don't know if it is a case of more murders or just more reporting but the situation doesn't seem very healthy.

At the risk of being accused of singing the same old song this kind of thing is going to get more frequent until those who control such things recognise the mistakes that they have  made with regard to serious juvenile crime.
Then  wishy washy PC liberal thinking like "they all need help, its the competitive society" etc etc etc need to be abandoned
Then crack down....... hard and especially early in the "little darlings career"

I understand social conditioning is involved but once they have arrived at late teens in such a twisted condition the damage has been done.
Think logically PC types, the criminals will now go to prison for a long time and a life has been lost.
If the error of their ways had been forcibly pointed out to them much earlier it is as certain as can be that this incident would not have happened. Not least because they may well have been in prison anyway.

Expressions of sympathy/outrage  now are useless.

I have to disagree with the sympathy and outrage now being useless, seeks.  The sympathy/outrage is there to honour Sophies memory and bravery for cradling his head and trying to protect him instead of running away - which I can guarentee is more than any of those brutes would have done in the same position.
I don't know if you read the reports or have seen anything, but the parents on one of the defendants laughed and acted with total disregard through the entire proceedings.  So whilst I agree the defendant should be charged, I totally believe that the parents should be held accountable as well, particularly for their behaviour in the court.  If it was up to me, I would charge them as well.

Raleigh is one of the more progressive areas of the southeast, between the universities and all the tech money... i'd try not to worry too much.

Treating the issue seriously that honour serves absolutely no purpose.
What is needed is to create the conditions where a young couple, or anybody for that matter, can feel safe and secure at any time of the day anywhere.
Obviously that ideal will never be achieved but we could be a lot closer to it than we are now.

I tend to tread a much less forgiving line than the.dark. on matters like this, and though I would be appalled at the behaviour of these two young thugs whoever their target may have been, it is the behaviour of the parent of one of them that has really enraged me here.

As a matter of course I believe in retribution and vengeance for one's actions, and hope that these two worthless bags of skin are given the roughest ride possible in prison as they clearly showed no remorse for their actions, so therefore they should be shown no remorse, pity or quarter at the hands of their peers in jail.

As far as the mother goes, real justice would see her watching her own child die slowly on a venitlator after a severe beating in prison, but sadly the world tends not to work that way. Instead the best we can hope for is that their lives are made a living hell while they rot in prison for their rest of their (hopefully short so that I'm not wasting my tax money on their upkeep) lives.

Harsh? Perhaps a little, but if they were dogs and behaved like this then they would be put down. The only difference here is that they did not act on animals instincts but knowingly killed someone just because they dared to have their own identity.

That is absolutely appalling and heartbreaking.  My prayers go out to the victims and their families. 

As for the age issue, I won't harp on it, but I can certainly see how a someone that age, let alone a group of them, could overpower a twenty-year-old woman.  A male relative of mine who is that age is 6' 4", 220 lbs. and not an ounce of it is fat.  Many people would think they can't be capable of that, but at that age, they are usually adult size and are old enough to be held accountable for their actions, especially actions of such a senselessly violent nature.

Geez, thats pathetic on their part.  I feel so sorry for the girl who lost her life for a choice that hurt no one over stupidity.  My deepest condolences to her family.

It seems wrong in the twenty first century, we in a civilised world are still singling out people with a different choice for eradication.What else did these things have in mind when they attacked  this woman, who was no threat to them.

Maybe it is a gang culture, strength in numbers thing, a combined brain cell, dead to all but the gang. Maybe it is time if we cannot educate, that we prohibit and teach by force, deny more than one a legal status and hunt those that deny.

I know gang mentality, a place where strength of the singular weak becomes fearsome, the combined brain cell feeding off each other, more than a match for the single victim.Toss in drugs, alcohol, a gang becomes a danger to all, frenzied with a lust to revert back to the primate in them, the ancient past to remove what is different.

Dogs are not allowed to roam in packs, why should people be allowed to roam in packs, people are people, so called civilised, but drink and drugs has an effect, time to ban it I think.
