Totally disagree.

One of the things that earned my boss's respect quickly at my last job was when I made an error, I would go directly to him and tell him about it, and suggest a way of fixing it while asking what he thought. He told me it took guts to do that and it gained his trust as well as his respect.

I also shared credit for a job well done with those who helped me get the job done.

Another good tip is take good notes while you're being trained.  Refer to your notes a lot and that will prevent you from asking repeated questions.  Then again if you're unsure about something, ask for help, rather than guess.

Wear heels and a really short skirt with no panties.  Make copies of your bum on the copy machine.  Put Bailey's in your coffee.  Bj's in the supply closet.  Gossip about the boss.
Oh wait...wrong thread.  My bad.

I once fucked and ditched the woman that became my boss.

That was bad politics.

Just ease in the door, and WATCH!!!!  I know it's a bitch between appearing reserved versus "stuck up" in a new environment.  Observe the other employees and how they interact, but don't try to match their attitude from day 1......maintain a professional demeanor, there will be time in the future to make jokes and cut up.....in the beginning, it's a major no-no.  If you have a job where you have any kind of probation or "trial" period, toe the line, keep your mouth shut and do what you're told.  Trust me on that one!

As mentioned, make your buddy look good....it is also his recommendation that helped you get in.  Obviously, you have some sort of skills that the place wants, recommendations will only go so far.  Try not to focus solely on the thought that he got you in, the decision was probably made from someone higher, right?

DO NOT, I can't stress it enough, DO NOT GET INVOLVED IN OFFICE POLITICS!!!!    If someone starts slamming their co-worker, just politely tell them that you will draw your own conclusions once you actually meet said person.  If done politely, it should be fine....it's the easiest way I've found to handle that situation.  Don't get dragged into the gossip circle.....if it appears you are paying the least bit of attention,  the gossip mongers will try to get you involved in it.  Keep an ear open, pay attention to what is said around the place, but don't repeat it!

Also, and this may have been mentioned, but it's just sort of a rule of thumb I've followed.....keep your private life just that....PRIVATE!  About all anyone at work knows about me is I have 3 cats, one son, and a yellow scooter from hell.....and tha'ts just fine wth me.  I have one very good, close friend I've "bonded" with, but even she doesn't know everything.  I learned a long time ago, there are no secrets in a police department....unless you keep them yourself.

Good luck with the new job, hope it goes well for you!

If the office minion won't drop her pants, surely she has to go?

Surely, one of the rewards of being a boss is to have ones evil way with the minions.

Right then.

Yours truly has been hired for office work.   I will try to smile while on phone  as voice then  relects it.

My buddy got me in.  But I was not to admit I know him.  [a platonic friend]  The 3rd time asked- I had no choice but to admit I knew him.  Mmy buddy is afraid- i wont tow the line and his reputation would be effected.  Now- we all have seen me on a rant, fragmented, obtuse,  poor grammar and spelling.  We seen me personalize topics that worked me up- and in the end- alot of effort for --- words on a screen.

Anyhow- I just got word on this 2 hours ago.  I start tommorrrow.  So I need to brush up on office demeanor and politics, and CYA.

Your analysis please.

Congrats, hunky ! You obviously have a lot of friends here that are rooting for you, dude. That says a lot about YOU and should make you proud.

As far as advice is concerned, folks in this thread have already given a wealth of it. I especially like how Emperor put it all into a nutshell, ummm, two nutshells. That's plenty. And remember, keep it simple, do the job the best that you can and finally, be yourself. You haven't gone wrong yet, being yourelf.

Best wishes!

I KNEW IT...that was you!   It all worked out, tho.  I auctioned off your personnel file on eBay.

Smooch.

Hey all!   Today went great!   Well- manageable.  There is plenty of space IN the office...no computer unless you count the places cell phone.  Phaze one of the project is easy-ish.    Phaze 2, if I get that far --would be like selling a person a Ford when I drive and prefer GM.

Finger nails. uhuh.  Being that I garden. ---I need to clean up my fingers.

The very job is temp  BUT if I do well,  I could be asked to do other projects.

It was odd driving in- and back.   A boost of self esteem indeed.

Being that I have limitations,  my shifts will be 4-6 hours.

--I have to remember to answer the question and stick with the point.   Not explore ways to change anything.   While I am told there is some flexabilty- the powers from above have a method to their madness- and irregardless if I agree with it-I am paid to walk THEIR walk.  Not my own.

-I think I can stay out of   the riffs.  I DO need to recall socializtion skills.

BTW- 3 were to be there today.  1 came....that being me.

I did ask per W-2 or1099, and explained as to why.  I am told the accounting department can handle my concern.

...I see my handwritten notations are what the boss likes.   So tommorrow I will do more of that.  :-)

With prices going up on everything I touch,  this comes at a good time.  Oddly- the place is next door to a place Iworkedand LOVED!  [7 years]

so far  so good.  I had told my buddy   that- it is easier to work when the roof isnt dependent to that check.  when everything -=every second rides on making rent- i got jittery.

Hey Hunk Boy...way to go!   Congrats on the first day.   The W-2 vs. 1099 is simple in concept but harder in execution.  Far easier for you is to become a W-2 employee, which means they hire you, and they pay ALL of your employee taxes (this means they withhold from your check an amount for Fed income taxes, State income taxes, Local income taxes (if applicable) and MEDICARE and FICA (two mandatory federal withholdings).  The company pays in equal amounts on your behalf for these taxes.  This means two things to you -- on the plus side, at the end of the year, you've pretty much paid your tax liability, you file one Fed. tax form, and you get back or pay in depending on your situation.

1099 means you are an independent contractor.  That means they give you a "gross check" -- the FULL amount of your earnings, with none of those deductions.  But the catch is you need to make those deductions yourself.  You need to pay "estimated tax payments" to the Fed and probably to Pennsylvania every 90 days.  Its NOT that hard, but it has to be set up and has to be done.

I'd opt for the W-2, tho it really depends on your personal tax status.   If you want to contact me off list for more info, go ahead.  And again, congrats.

E.
