Just ease in the door, and WATCH!!!! I know it's a bitch between appearing reserved versus "stuck up" in a new environment. Observe the other employees and how they interact, but don't try to match their attitude from day 1......maintain a professional demeanor, there will be time in the future to make jokes and cut up.....in the beginning, it's a major no-no. If you have a job where you have any kind of probation or "trial" period, toe the line, keep your mouth shut and do what you're told. Trust me on that one! As mentioned, make your buddy look good....it is also his recommendation that helped you get in. Obviously, you have some sort of skills that the place wants, recommendations will only go so far. Try not to focus solely on the thought that he got you in, the decision was probably made from someone higher, right? DO NOT, I can't stress it enough, DO NOT GET INVOLVED IN OFFICE POLITICS!!!! If someone starts slamming their co-worker, just politely tell them that you will draw your own conclusions once you actually meet said person. If done politely, it should be fine....it's the easiest way I've found to handle that situation. Don't get dragged into the gossip circle.....if it appears you are paying the least bit of attention, the gossip mongers will try to get you involved in it. Keep an ear open, pay attention to what is said around the place, but don't repeat it! Also, and this may have been mentioned, but it's just sort of a rule of thumb I've followed.....keep your private life just that....PRIVATE! About all anyone at work knows about me is I have 3 cats, one son, and a yellow scooter from hell.....and tha'ts just fine wth me. I have one very good, close friend I've "bonded" with, but even she doesn't know everything. I learned a long time ago, there are no secrets in a police department....unless you keep them yourself. Good luck with the new job, hope it goes well for you!
