Status: offline 		  Police want to start using drones in Miami. Mostly they are waiting for the FAA to get off its butt and set some rules for the drone usage. But i wonder what everone thinks about this. i have no problem with them as long as there is a human at the other end controling it. i know some are going to freak out about these and claim they will be used to inveade privacy, but i think they not be that bad. At the very least i feel better about these than 24/7 cameras being put up everywhere, if for no othr reason than they can't just sit and watch one all day without it being somewhat obvious.

Status: offline 		Been in use with British Transport Police (yes, we have a special police force for the railways) for a while now to deter/catch vandals and the brave souls who go stripping the power lines for scrap metal. The advantage being of course that the vandals/thieves have no idea where/when the drone will be - with a fixed camera, they can simply avoid its field of view.

Status: offline 		Doesn't anyone else wonder what would happen if it broke... I mean... do we all have to go around wearing hard hats just in case a drone falls from the sky.

I can just imagine what would happen if the operator got a view of me getting a suntan in my privacy fenced back yard...Hell he'd go blind for sure...then crash in an orphanage or something.

Status: offline 		Eh, I don't see what the big deal is.  Helicopters and fixed wing aircraft already are flying over, and they have sophisticated surveillance gear on board too.  If the police need to spy, I guess it should be done at the cheapest expense to the taxpayer.  After all, drones don't get tired, need lunch, or have Monday hang-overs.

They can circle or patrol a zone for huge amounts of time at minimal costs. People on the ground never know when or where they will show up-they can detect infrared signatures even in dense brush-where  a human cannot see. They can carry ordinance and lay it accurately on target. I can see drones being used with knockout gas bombs to nail suspects down in remote areas-allowing the police to get those suckers-and not risk law enforcement lives in gun battles.

No worse than weather balloons.  One fell in my neighborhood when I was very young, and it resulted in all out block party.

Not every city in the U.S. is capable of having community policing (ie, cops walking the beat.)  Most cities in the U.S. are fairly new, which means they grew up after the advent of the automobile.  People don't live close together anymore in tight nit communities.  They haven't lived that way in 50 years in most places.  We will never have enough money to hire "beat cops" for every neighborhood in America.  It's just not going to happen.  You can have community policing in downtown areas and in older cities, but you can't do that in communities that rely on automobiles for transit.  Miami is one of those cities, and that is not going to change anytime soon.

Status: offline 		I think you may be wrong in your assumptions...There are high crime areas that are in relatively small areas that have in the past had beat cops and could benefit from them today... at least in St. Louis and Kansas City.. I have spent time in Miami and there are the same kind of areas there.

It was a big mistake to put officers in patrol cars.. when I was growing up the beat cop was respected and an ambassador for the police department.

You can talk to the beat cop... hard to talk  to or respect drones.
