Struggling Ford has sold the leading British brands Jaguar and Land Rover to Indian conglomerate TATA, for a knockdown price - a loss on what Ford paid for the two.

Cue more jobs being shipped off to India for lower wage costs?

This was always on the cards once the government allowed the intitial sell off. Once Japan started making decent vehicles cheaper than the UK, the writing was on the wall. Add Motorbikes and electrical goods to the list, and its shows how low British Manufactoring has dropped.

Well, that is one bodacious TATA now.

My Uncle used to work for Ford. He would be close to retirement now but he died.

I guess they just couldn't get along without him. Lost what, nine billion last year ? Doesn't matter, but he probably would've quit in shame. He was there when they bought Jaguar.

It is a combination of different forms of taxation that make overseas so attractive. It is not all from the government, but anything you pay that does not result in output is taxation in the broader sense of the word.

But I just thought of a question. When Ford bought Jaguar, did they start building them here ?

I will ponder that some other time.

British management couldn't make a profit from the successful mini and it should be indicted for how few Landrovers were sold when it could have sold four times as many with a little investment. Leyland didn't have a new model for eleven years. The workers were blamed for the demise of the British car industry but one has to blame the management. The French car industry was in the same position as Leyland in the 70s but has since proved remarkably successful. The fortunes of car companies always go in cycles so it won't be long before the brand s will be being sdold on again or chut down.

Is that the same group that bought the remains of MG a few years back?

All i can say is, if Queen Victoria were still around today, there would be hell to pay.

Of course, that's nothing to the beat-downs Henry Ford will be giving out if he wakes up...

The article says that TATA (what a hilarious name, by the way) has no plan to relocate manufacturing to India.

For now.

Oil well, it's only 16,000 jobs.

Its more like 50,000 jobs Kittin - if the plant goes, so do the component suppliers, the transport companies, the warehousing and logistics providers etc. And they in turn take out another swathe of their suppliers.

Personally, I really can see no reason why lower cost Indian labour cannot produce a Land Rover or Jaguar for much less at the same quality, for what little labour is involved. If one has the designs and one has the facilities, its only a matter of someone else doing whats done in the UK.

Its really a question about whether the quality image of the brands can be maintained if theyre made in India - which doesnt have anything to do with how good the quality actually is, regardless of which side of the Khyber Pass theyre made.

Build quality does change when production moves.  Whether its a step up or a step down, no two plants seem to do the same thing the same way.

So far, TATA (I can't write this name without laughing) has no plan to relocate. If and when they do, I'm sure they will have learnt plenty from the UK manufacturing plant. In the end, it's lovely globalisation that's at work. If Jaguar's image has to decline as a consequence of this buyout... well, there's still Rolls Royce. Oh hold on... that's BMW's pet now, isn't it  ?

Oh yes Kittin - we transport bits and pieces for RR as part of what we do for BMW....

Thats what makes Britain Great - everything's for sale!

Now, what am I bid for this royal family? One careful owner, full servant history, complete with palace and jewelry......

Not for long! According to industry gossip, the BOOBS Group has tendered a bid for BMW.

Well I think it might actually be a little different with India (compared for example to China)
A number of reasons but to single out a few.

1 - China has I think an above 90% literacy rate while India below 70% But higher education is well developed. A part of the reason was the Nehru government that financed higher education in a disproportional manner (compared to most countries). The investments in higher and elementary educations were about 50:50.   Therefore you don’t have enough qualified physical labor but have a stronger presence in “higher” sectors and therefore a rising middle class and economy that does not reflect in the same way on the low classes.

2 - remains of socialist legislation that makes it very difficult to fire an employee even if he/she does not come to work at all.

3 – complicated bureaucracy and a lot of corruption on all levels

I’m not sure about the taxes but I doubt it is a “tax heaven” .

That’s what I can think off now, there are other reasons probably  -just remembered another one: English is an official language and most educated people speak it. That is another difference if favor of a different  sector than a typical developing world country.

In a way India jumped over a few customary steps of industrialization common to most societies and in present circumstances the businesses are based more on a capital intensive than labor intensive economy.  They will probably provide the software (they do that for most companies already anyway)  and the like, but I’m not sure how much they “cry over” not moving the production to India even if there might be some reasons to do that to.
