DesFIP -> Forest Fire (3/25/2008 1:57:36 PM)

In the woods behind my house. For the third time in fifteen years one of my near neighbors has decided a nice, windy day is the perfect one to take out all the paper, sticks, bags of leaves etc and do a burn. They get it going, and go inside to watch tv. Surprise, the woods are lit up.

I ran up to make sure it was out of control and sure enough, it's sweeping across the leaf mold rapidly while the hapless homeowner is throwing a bucket of water on it which will do absolutely nothing.

I called 911 and they told me to calm down, at which point I started laughing and explained I was just out of breath from running up the hill. But I did tell them where it was, in case they can't just follow the plume of smoke.

What kind of idiot does this? Pick an absolutely still day and sit out there with a hose damn it, and make sure you've dug a burn pit down into the clay, only about 4" deep here.

I shall go out and ogle the fire fighters from a safe distance, I don't want the hose getting to me.

The same thing happens here although most have the sense to start the fire in a clear area. Still, it is dangerous and you get a snoot full of smoke every time you go outside. Then there was the idiot at least a mile down the road who decided to burn all the old rubber backed carpeting from his house, rather than pay someone to haul it away. It smoldered for days...

What a maroon. You'll be safe?

we rarely have anything in the country, we do a backburn from the outer edge into the wind first then let er buck.

"Let er buck?" Sounds kinky...

It's far enough from my house that since the fire department got right on it, I shouldn't have any repercussions. Of course if he burns the bear out of it's den and I get it around here, I will be fighting mad.

How'd it turn out? Everything okay?

~Fast Reply~

Have you considered having some fire safety tips magically "appear" in their mailbox?

That's a really good idea! And your area's rules regarding open burning...
