Whenever it asks you if you want to download and install anything, there is a magic word in Windows, NO NO NO NO NO NO. Everything no. You get SP1, whatever drivers you might need and once everything is working, you say no for evermore. Flashplayer, NO. Realplayer, NO. Everything NO !. It works now, I'll bother you when it does not. Until then do not bother me. A newer version of AOL is available, are you kidding me ? Every version ends in point zero because it is a beta. Windows is not ready when you get it, you do need certain things, but I suggest you do it selectively. If you aren't going to use IE, DO NOT get any security updates for IE. You really do need SP1, but other than that, I wouldn't take Mediaplayer 10 if they paid me. And they can shove Vista, errr put it where it will not get sunburn. If Dlink still supported 98 that is what I would have. But they dragged me kicking and screaming into XP. Only thing I am grateful for is that I really do have the very best version of it. But there is still a thing or two I cannot get it to do, but that is for another post. Got IE5.5 at work running in NT4 Workstation. It is fine. Realistically most of what I do online could be done in DOS. Text based. That's why I do not worry about a virus or trojan. And I have no mailing lists. Any phone numbers or other important info on this PC is in a text file, and it is only there when I can't find a pen or pencil. Now that my media is 90% backed up I should be OK. I haven't played a computer game all year, and probably most of last year at least. The computer is nothing but a tool. I do not want entertainment except for my downloaded files. I might make the move to Linux or Lindows soon. It will certainly be considered once XP is obsolete. And I will still run it until it does not run. In Windows, the word NO is your best friend, except when it comes to SP1. Other than that you should need nothing. T
