I just saw Phil Donahue on C-SPAN's Q&A, promoting his new documentary which follows a paralyzed Iraqi War veteran.  The film will be rolling out into selected theaters in the next month and looks quite interesting and moving.  Interspersed with footage and interviews with Tomas Young, the featured veteran, is footage of our administration and of our country's fine senators.  He shows how each member of the senate voted on the Iraq War Resolution.

Most interesting (and disgusting) is that he highlights Bush, the senators and our representatives (both Reps and Dems alike) using the exact same soundbites, saying the exact same words as one another, in different settings.

You can watch the interview (with video clips) online here.  It's about an hour long.  I thought folks might find it interesting.  I plan to see the film (87 minutes) once it comes out.

(Edited to fix spelling)

So is the film about a disabled vet, or is he just an exploitable and expendable tool to get at the audiences emotions in yet another bit of propaganda hackery about how Bush is baa-aaad?  Oh wait, Donahue.  I guess we already know the answer to that question.

At least he got dental insurance when he agreed to become exploitable and expendable to the government by putting on the uniform.

We owe a lot better to the guys who come home broken and damaged and they deserve a lot better advocacy.  Their tragedy should not be fodder for other agendas.

According to Tomas Young, he wanted his story told.    All proceeds from the documentary are going to a non profit group called Iraq Veterans Against the War.  Eddie Vedder created and donated the theme song.   Apparently because of Vedder's contribution to the documentary, a bunch of musicians (Bruce Springstein, Neil Young, Pearl Jam, etc.) contributed enough songs to create a 30 tract, double CD, and proceeds from the CD will also go to Iraq Veterans Against War.

It doesn't come across as an exploitation to me, but we all view things differently.

Yup, Phil was on Bill Moyers this week promoting the doc. I'm sure Himself and I will see it when it comes out.

Let me know when the proceeds are going to modify cars for paraplegics, or put good daycares at the rehab centers, or about a bazillion other things besides a fucking political campaign.

No thanks.  I was just putting it out there because I thought people would find it interesting.  I'm not interested in doing everyone's homework for them.

PS: You can click on the link I provided for their organization and see how they are spending money.  Feel free to make suggestions!

They have "adequate healthcare" right behind immediate withdrawal and full reparations (mutually exclusive to my way of thinking).  I think I'll put my money and effort where the priorities are a bit more focused.

I can respect that point of view.  I want to see it for the spotlight it shows on both parties saying the exact same things and spewing the same fear.  Since the proceeds aren't going to anything I inherently despise, I'm cool with spending my money on it.

Thanks for responding.
