China might bar live television broadcasts from Tiananmen Square during the Beijing Olympics, apparently unnerved by the recent outburst of unrest among Tibetans and fearful of protests in the heart of the Chinese capital.
A ban on live broadcasts would disrupt the plans of NBC and other major international networks, who have paid hundreds of millions of dollars to broadcast the Aug. 8-24 games and are counting on eye-pleasing live shots from the iconic square.

The rethinking of Beijing's earlier promise to broadcasters comes as the government has poured troops into Tibetan areas wracked by anti-government protests this month and stepped up security in cities, airports and entertainment venues far from the unrest.

In another sign of the government's unease, 400 American Boy Scouts who had been promised they could onto the field following a March 15 exhibition game between the Los Angeles Dodgers and San Diego Padres were prevented from doing so by police.

They are going to edit it out later and doctor in Chinese flags over the US ones. People may wonder for a while where all them black Chinese athletes came from. I could be wrong but I think this is their plan.[8|]

The footage of Mao throwing the javelin will be pretty special, too.

Yes we shall have to watch carefully for the slight break in film.[8|]

Which particular event will be held in Tiananman Square ?
The Chinese know how to make a buck....floolish American lapdog of reactionary oppression.
We feed beautiful Chinese pigs with  your Coca Cola

Thats what all the outrage over Tibet is about.
Lets see if we can screw the Chinese.

Men usually compete in ten events including 50m rifle three positions (prone, standing, kneeling); 50m rifle prone; 10m air rifle; 50m pistol; 25m rapid fire pistol; 10m air pistol; 10m running target; Trap (shotgun); Double Trap (shotgun); and Skeet (shotgun)

The women have seven events: 50m rifle three positions (prone, standing, kneeling); 10m air rifle; 25m pistol; 10m air pistol; Trap (shotgun); Double Trap (shotgun); and Skeet (shotgun).

This is interesting.  I learn so much on these boards.  For  a long time I have noticed that Brits in general (and accross the political spectrum) seem to have a problem with Kurds, never gotten a straight answer why.  I assume it has somehting to do with the old Empire.  Now I am learning that the Tibetians are in a similar catagory.

Sanity -> RE: Chinese may ban live tv during Olympics (3/21/2008 6:19:30 PM)

That's kind of spooky, Level. That's a fairly major development! I wonder what they're afraid of showing. They have to have good reason to do this, you would think... unless perhaps they're just suffering from the old 'analysis to paralysis' thing.

Level -> RE: Chinese may ban live tv during Olympics (3/21/2008 6:51:19 PM)

Sanity, I get the feeling they're hinky about individuals or groups trying to show them up. This is their showcase, a chance to try to show the world that they're no longer good ol' ass-backwards China. You get some buddhist lighting himself up like back in Vietnam on international TV, that whole "showcase" thing will go right down the crapper.

luckydog1 -> RE: Chinese may ban live tv during Olympics (3/21/2008 6:55:19 PM)

Sanity, they are afraid of public demonstrations against the Government.  The Tibetians are in the streets, the Muslims recently tried to blow up a plane, and you can bet solid money that Fauln Gong, is going to put on a show before the Olympics are over.  Probably some others are gearing up also.  These groups know that now is thier best chance ever to push for more rights...

TheHeretic -> RE: Chinese may ban live tv during Olympics (3/21/2008 7:13:18 PM)

I won't be watching the Games.  Will the US media go along meekly with this kind of censorship, I wonder, or might we see a backlash on how they cover everything else?

Of course, we already know about CNN's stance from how they stayed in Iraq before the war.

farglebargle -> RE: Chinese may ban live tv during Olympics (3/21/2008 7:18:16 PM)

Does the US media go along meekly with US censorship.

Yup.

bipolarber -> RE: Chinese may ban live tv during Olympics (3/21/2008 7:49:27 PM)

It might also be that they are worried about another "tank man" type incident. The Chinese Government would hav loved to have slowly tortured that gut to death... "How dare an individual stand in the way of our tanks, keeping them from killing those dissidents?"

PanthersMom -> RE: Chinese may ban live tv during Olympics (3/22/2008 9:35:21 PM)

tank man is one of those images that they would rather not see repeated, live tv would give anyone the chance to tarnish their image.  like they don't do enough of that all on their own.
