Sarkozy suffered a rebuke as his party and allies had significant losses in local elections.

The past few months have seen Sarkozy's popularity rating plunge from above 60% to under 40%. Although unemployment has fallen to its lowest level for more than two decades, a sense of gloom remains and the high cost of living has become the main concern for many French people.

I think the Brits could have told the French that they'll pay more for the privilege of being governed by the right. Mind you, the French have been partying on the backs of their children and grand children but as the Germans have proved, you don't need right wing ideology you just have to stop the party.

Il est puant - but you'll agree that in a democracy, the people get the government they deserve, blah blah blah. They voted him in (I hasten to add I voted for Royal), but now that they're paying the price of his insanely extreme right-wing policies, they're crying like babies.

It's always like that in France [8|] .

Sarkozy n'est qu'un gros con puant.

Isn't Sarkozy trying to reform  ie reduce state welfare expenditure and feather bedding, things like that?
As soon as people see where reform is heading ie straight at them, they soon see sense.

He came and snogged Baby Bush in the summer, like a crawling worm that he is. Put him in a room with me and I bet you I'll KO him in seconds.

Like most rightwingers he's a populist and not prone to complex thought. Now he's in office he realizes delivering his poison isn't going to be that easy.

Well, they did one thing right.  Now they have one hot First Lady.

You mean  the poison of the Common Agricultural Policy.
A sweet drink indeed.....for some.
Lets swim in the wine lake, climb a butter mountain and generally take our share of  the zillions of unaccounted subsidies. Its only money....lovely money.
Ireland had a bonaza...its out turn next.

Heh heh, Sarkozy's rightwing revolution doesn't go that far. If you read between the lines of his electioneering, he expected the rest of Europe to subsidize the French not the French themselves. The wine lake and butter mountain are now of the past, though they still inhabit much Euro myth. The French realize they can't keep living off their children and grandchildren's inheritance, the problem politicians have is how to reform France. Sarkozy seemed to be saying he would do a Margerat Thatcher. That way he would end up being guillotined.

I hope whoever reforms France doesn't destroy its essence, unlike Britain, it still has a soul and it would be a shame to lose it just so the greedy rich can be even richer. This is the irony, it seems to me the average French person has a better quality of life than the average Brit and it isn't as if Britain has done away with poverty by going more capitalist, it has just degraded everybody's quality of life.

As far as the vote goes, its another typical article from the Guardianista. They overlooked, but did mention, the fact that unemployment in France is at its lowest for twenty years. We all know local elections in the UK almost always go against the party in power. Why should France be different ?

Meatclever.... The wine lake is a myth?.... well it wasnt last year when it was costing £895 million in subsidies..... All the Europhiles love to shove these inconveniant facts under the carpet. Its ironic im citing the Guardian isnt it. [;)]

What makes it even worse from the French point of view that in double blind wine tastings American wines are frequently chosen as being superior to French ones.

Its PC thinking and immigration thats destroying the UK's soul.
Tho' I constantly moan about the precarious state of our economy the fact is there still seems to be a lot of wealth which is spread way down the social strata.
Its how its being sustained that worries me. ie bank credit not real value added activity.

Chloelicious -> RE: French tire of Sarkozy? (3/18/2008 4:42:45 AM)

Ahhhhh Sarkozy.........

What a guy......

midget with the ego of a giant, married to an ancient top model who is used to get the men of the others then kick them in the curb when she's over with them!!! trying to put his children in every little hole he can find in politics.

Talking about the beautifull carla his wife: She sings they say (wonder how she got no voice at all), She accepted to marry him and became France first lady when a few month ago she was saying :

Despite living in France since she was five, Carla admitted she didn't vote in the last Presidential election last May, and still considers herself Italian. "I'm not French at all," she said. "I don't have a French passport I have an Italian passport. "I like to be Italian. I like the Italian temperament and I like Italian food. French people are in a bad mood for some reason, and Italian people are in a good mood." Asked if the famously elegant Paris was a nicer city than London, she said: "I don't think so. I've really been surprised at how beautiful London is. "And in London you don't feel the pollution because there are so many parks. In Paris, I live on the edge of the city because it's the only place where you have green spaces. "In the middle of Paris, it's really hard, really unbearable."She added: "French people are always negative. They also are crazy about their own language, so every time there's something that's not in French, they get so mad about it."
Amazing huh.

True but Sarkozy has hit record lows in record time in the opinion polls. Normally this soon after an election a leader is still in their honeymoon period. Last time I was in Paris, I was surpirised at the open hostility towards him when one got into a political conversation and from people who should be his natural supporters.

As far as I can gather from conversations, though I could be wrong, a lot of British type of massaging the figures is going on.

The lake is a pond compared to what it used to be, even if it is a rather large pond. I understand the reluctance of the French to dig up their vines because should the fashion turn from lighter new world red wines back to heavier red wines, they would have burnt their bridges. But they are making too much middle of the road wine. Personally I love the heavier French reds, I still think they're the best but sadly I'm out of step with the world.

I'm with you on the PC lark, social work politics hasn't worked but destroyed so much soul. I'm pretty sad when I go back to Britain, there really does seem something missing from its heart. Maybe its just nostalgia on my part.

I don't have a nationalistic bone in my body; but France has become one hell of a soulless shithole. Maybe I, too, am being nostalgic.

As for Bruni... I think she's terrifying, and not at all hot, but refrigerating. Indeed, anybody who would marry the clown Sarko is fucked up. Here is what Justine Levy has to say (Bruni was instrumental in breaking up her marriage):

quote:

If I understand the first quote correctly she is being described like the perfectly presented porn star I complained about elsewhere.
I like a face/body with character and a bit worn, not just well formed smooth tho' beautiful plastic.

The description makes her sound like a Terminator more than like a porn star.
