Al Franken's main competition for the Democratic nomination for U.S. Senate dropped out Monday, giving the comedian-turned-candidate a major boost.

Franken and lawyer Mike Ciresi were vying for the party's endorsement to take on Republican Sen. Norm Coleman in November. Coleman is seeking a second term.

Franken has raised millions more in campaign funds and lined up most of the important union endorsements, but Ciresi's impressive resume as a trial attorney and personal wealth positioned him as a potential spoiler to Franken's ambition.

He should make Cspan more entertaining at least.

With that juggernaut Air America behind him, how can he lose? Lol.

luckydog1 -> RE: Senator Franken? (3/11/2008 10:39:11 AM)

I saw a funny thing on TV the other night.  A show called "Masterminds", where they analyze mjor criminals.  Air America was the name of one of largest Cocaine smuggling operations to ever operate in the USA.  And Al likes to make jokes about his past Coke use.

The comedy wing is one of the main legs of the Dem party, I guess we will see how well it works.

Keep watching Fox...It shows the difference between the two sides. Air America fails because liberals do not need to be constantly reminded of the "correctness" of their opinions and views.

Good luck to Franken...He seems to be a fairly honest man.

With all of the anti-American bull-crap coming from Rush and the rest,Air America is at least balancing out the rabble.

A job well done.

Wasn't "Air America" a CIA front that was smuggling heroin out of south east Asia?

             How many times must I cry "bullshit" on this koolaid, DG?  Put it down!  It's YUCKY!  Air America fails because their morning chick was too angry, too much, and never did find the balance of information and humor that gets people to work in the morning in a decent mood.

         Air America FAILS because Franken has no business in a radio studio.   He was awful.  A voice made for screenwriting.  Did he even get that he was in a different medium?

      Ed Shulz was fun and funny sometimes, but, but, but, isn't "hate speech" a bad thing?  The guy is brutal.

      It was very crappy radio.  If they figure out WHY they failed, instead of just laying blame, it might get better.

"The conservative echo chamber believes Air America Radio is going down like Jeff Gannon on an overnight press-pass to the White House. Left-wing talk radio they said, was over before it began. But like all so-called wisdom coming from the GOP noise machine, you better check the facts before you believe it. It turns out that contrary to conservative spin and wishful thinking, Air America, barely a year old, is building an audience and starting to eat in to the market share of conservative talkers who have been around for decades."

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
"In his own backyard, how can Limbaugh lose to a liberal talker? What am I doing with a 3.4 and he's sitting with a 3.2?" Schultz asked RAW STORY in a telephone interview this morning. "We've coming a long way from being the poor little guy from North Dakota." Al Franken, whose Air America program runs head-on with Rush in the noon to 3 p.m. slot, also made strides, posting 2.1 ratings among 25-64, up from 1.5 in the winter. The two programs posted gains in every single age category.
These trends show what has been obvious to many Americans. Regressives like the GOP and their right-wing allies are becoming personally offensive to many Americans and a relic of the past. Most of these right wing talkers are such hypocrites there is little value in listening to their opinion. People like Rush Limbaugh, who once posited that talented African American NFL player Donovan McNabb was only a starting quarterback because of his color, pretends to reach out to people of color on behalf of the GOP with the likes of radical, anti-civil rights quack Jesse Lee Peterson. Moreover, Rush Limbaugh, who does not believe in a right to privacy, underwent a huge flip-flop suing all the way to the Supreme Court to protect his right to privacy in a costly and failed frivolous litigation to apparently try and conceal evidence of his doctor-shopping from prosecutors."
Oh sure, he's doing well now... but just wait. The Rethuglicans will dig up all that dirt on him from his SNL days... the coke use, the teen prostitutes, his selling nuke secrets to aliens from Altair IV, the implication of his involvement with the "suicide" of his old partner Tom Davis, the oxy contin addiction, his "doctor shopping," (oh wait, that was another radio host) his selling out of his country while a POW during Nam, his failed command of a swift boat.... and anything else they can make up, like they always do.
Does anyone else out there think that "Republican" automatically  = lying bastard, the way I do?
       When your business declares bankruptcy, that's a bad sign.
      And being up 140% isn't all that impressive when you start from about 6 people listening.  Perhaps the new management has a clue?   Let me know when 500 stations are broadcasting it.
     Look at the numbers you posted, O59.  Take off the blinders.  74,600 in the 12+ demographic???  I think business math might be out of your pay grade.
You`re so full of it.
The 12 plus demo is just one of many.
The most important and profitable demographic is the 25-54 year old demo.
I`ll print it again for ya.
"In the key demographic 25-54 “The Al Franken Show” increased its AQH by 36%(32,600 to 44,400) and also went from a 1.7 share to a 2.4; the show’s TSL received a 32% increase."
Did you miss that or ignore it?I could print it in Spanish if that would help.
Obviously you don`t know how market share or demographics work.Or what bankruptcy is.
One man`s bankruptcy is another man`s reorganization.
AA sought bankruptcy protection and reorganized their debts and found a new owner.Happens everyday in business and doesn`t mean a company isn`t solvent.
Fox News ran at a 5 million dollar deficit for it`s 1st 4-5 years.
Can you explain how that means success?
Now ,back to the thread....
luckydog1 -> RE: Senator Franken? (3/12/2008 12:09:09 AM)
OF course owner is right, we are not talking about baseball teams are we?   IF one of those fails it means very bad things about the leader.  Air America will keep getting its subsidies, and stay on the air.  Its kind of a no brainer.
I always liked the story about how they stole from the Boys and Girls Club in NYC to keep it going for a while.
MmeGigs -> RE: Senator Franken? (3/12/2008 5:07:24 AM)
I'm a Minnesotan who will be choosing between Al Franken and Norm Coleman for Senator.  I suspect that Franken will do pretty well.  I wouldn't be surprised if he wins.  You have to remember that this is the state that made Jesse Ventura our governor.  One of his opponents was Norm Coleman.
Norm didn't win his semate seat by much in 2002 against a candidate pulled in at the last minute after Paul Wellstone died.  A lot of people held their noses and voted for Norm just because they felt that Mondale was too old, but it was still a tight race.  In 2002, the Republicans were doing much better in MN than they are now.  In 2004, MN went for Kerry.  In 2006, we put Amy Klobuchar in the Senate and replaced a number of our Republican seats in the House with Democrats.
Neither Coleman nor Franken are wildly popular here, both are going to have to do a lot of convincing by November, and I suspect that Franken will be better at that than Coleman.  He's more articulate - a much better orator.  Coleman has some baggage from his last election - promises he made that people have discovered they were right to be skeptical of.  He's also been a bit of a lap-dog for Bush, something folks here aren't terribly happy about.  He came out early in the presidential race for Giuliani, which struck many folks here as rather odd.  It reminded a lot of people that Norm Coleman isn't really a Minnesota boy.  Whatever folks here may think of Al Franken, we all know that he is a Minnesota boy.  That's going to figure into this race, too.
It's going to be a very interesting race.  I suspect it's going to be pretty close, and I wouldn't be the least bit surprised if after the elections, we have a Senator Franken.
Now ,Paul Wellstone was one super guy.
popeye1250 -> RE: Senator Franken? (3/12/2008 10:34:58 AM)
I'm wondering should he get elected will he try to force his own "agenda" down the throats of his constituents or, will he actually LISTEN to his constituents and vote the way (they) want him to vote?
I don't know why senators and congressmen think they're "leaders", they're not, these are "Messenger" positions.
The People put them in office to do our bidding.
Anytime I hear a politician say that they're, "going to vote my conscience" they need to resign right then and there as they've broken the bond with The People.
