Just remember a few things:
Let them feed until they are done - they will drop off by themselves - you don't want to be trying to pull them off.
As they secrete a powerful anti-coagulant into the wound (it's how they keep the blood flowing), the wound will likely continue to bleed for some time after they are finished.
Medical grade is better - they will have been raised under sterile conditions, and are certain as to genus and species.
If you're not planning on keeping them, then have a humane way planned to euthanise them.

Thanks for the advice, TK, it's appreciated. I had read up about leeches and the guides I've read have suggested that a leech will tend to drop off once it's finished feeding. Also, it said to add a piece of gauze with a small hole in the centre to the area I want to apply the leech to as it will deter the leech from moving around to another site to feed.

I noticed on the sites which offer leeches for medical purposes that they also offer ones for fishing, yet do not recommend these for medical purposes... it does not explain why. If they're both farmed/reared in controlled environments, why aren't they both suitable for medical applications, any idea why?

mnottertail -> RE: Leeches (3/9/2008 11:13:24 AM)

The ones that are for medicinal purposes have been kept in tanks in which antibiotic impregnated foodstuffss and what not to insure no sorts of possible contamination.

You can squick all you fellers want, but I would think that the last recorded case of leech death was about the time of Copernicus.

This is taking the worry and safety, way too fucking far, and if you want a leech off you now, just sprinkle some goddamn salt on it, and you can use alum to seal the wound, it aint as if it is a great bleeding bloody fucking gash.

Show of hands, how many of you (that have ever had a leech firmly affixed to some body part) are still in some sort of eternal agony from the infliction of its vicious and agonizing maw?

C'mon, I mean---fuckin' really; kids. Just a headfuck.

I saw this film ‘Speed 2 Cruise Control’ where the evil bloke used leaches to stave off blood poisoning. Apparently they are good for that although I was under the impression they sucked blood rather than transfused it. I guess I really shouldn't place too much stock in believing movie facts.[8|]

I think what it is with the BDSM scene, we are all conditioned to looking at the risk aspects of things, we risk assess as if it were second nature. Risk assessment is important, but thoughts of it should not override everything else.

Basically to cut fallacy, find out the proper gen from reliable and knowledgeable sources, weigh up the risk if there is any and then move forward if you still desire to do the thing in question. Just don't get bogged down in the ifs the buts and superior knowledge of others unless they can prove that knowledge.

If you learn something from your research and play, by all means let us know, I am sure we will find it interesting or those that do can ask more of you to save the delicacy and squeamishness of others, as it takes all sorts.

MissMorrigan -> RE: Leeches (3/10/2008 1:18:44 AM)

I'm more worried about them farting [:'(]

Guess I'll have to get me nursey uniform from the loft and don a plastic apron, or two

Maybe three...

He's got a large willy, I'm now wondering if I should line the walls with binbags should those things explode.

I also like to be 'prepared' for all eventualities. I don't like being taken by surprise (yeah yeah, you sub types, I can hear you chorusing "Me!" "Me!" "Me!"

At the end of the day, I take certain risks with some of my interests - calculated risks and my first priority is safety - for all involved. At the end of the day, I go with my judgement and any decisions I make. It's natural, for people who haven't explored certain things, such as with leech play for instance, to want to find out as much information as possible. Infact, a classic example of NOT doing this can be found in the Health and Safety section of these boards when someone had been instructing another via cam to insert items into their urethra - and then began posting when bleeding occurred and the OP was clueless as to what to do.

I am not even the slightest bit amused by the OP and the subject matter.Want to mind fuck me i am sure with your sick twisted mind you can come up with something more palpable...no offense and to each their own but as they ay across the pond..not my cup of tea.

thanks for sharing......[sm=rolleyes.gif]

That's quite amusing, Chezzy, given that I pointed out in the OP: if you don't like this subject matter, move along, constructive replies only, thank you. What part of that did you fail to comprehend? Yet you continued reading despite the subject heading being clear... unless you felt the subject heading was in reference to you, I fail to see why you continued reading and then make an asinine comment about one coming up with something more 'palpable'.

Lesson in life. The world does not revolve around you, until now I never knew you existed, I remain unaffected either way that you still do. I'm sure you'll survive this visual anomaly, as I will yours. You will find many other threads to critique and provide constructive criticism which, I'm sure, the extent to be, "Ewwwww", "That's sick."
