The mayor of a French village has issued a decree banning residents from dying in his territory unless they own a spot in the overcrowded cemetery.

"It is forbidden for any person not having a plot in the cemetery ... to die on the territory of the village," the mayor of the southwestern village of Sarpourenx wrote in a decree that warned of "severe punishment" for offenders.

Mayor Gerard Lalanne told AFP he had taken the radical measure to protest against a legal ruling preventing him from enlarging the burial ground in the village of 260 people.

"The first dead person to come along, I'll send him to the state's representative," he said.

Lalane said he had been inspired by the mayor of another French village, Cugnaux, who had also outlawed death as a protest last year and who thus won the right to enlarge the village's cemetery.

All the world's a stage at some of Minnesota's bars. A new state ban on smoking in restaurants and other nightspots contains an exception for performers in theatrical productions. So some bars are getting around the ban by printing up playbills, encouraging customers to come in costume, and pronouncing them "actors."

The customers are playing right along, merrily puffing away — and sometimes speaking in funny accents and doing a little improvisation, too.

The state Health Department is threatening to bring the curtain down on these sham productions. But for now, it's on with the show.

A firefighter fired for fainting is suing the city of Saratoga Springs. Nathaniel King lost his job with the city fire department in December when he failed to complete newly required paramedic training, according to a lawsuit filed against the city in state Supreme Court in Saratoga County. Now he's suing to get his job back and for back pay.

The problem is, needles are his nemesis. During paramedic training, King fainted dead away every time he had to give an injection or start an intravenous line.

In the lawsuit, King says he successfully completed emergency medical technician training before being hired, but the department later increased job requirements to include paramedic training. That meant he had to use needles.
Assistant Fire Chief John Betor said he couldn't discuss the specifics of King's case, but he was aware of the lawsuit.

In his court filing, King says Betor tried to help him with his needle aversion. He says he even tried hypnotism on Betor's advice, but it didn't help.

Public Safety Commissioner Ronald Kim said he can't discuss pending litigation.

PASCO, Wash. - Sheriff's detectives in Franklin County said a man had his friend shoot him in the shoulder so he wouldn't have to go to work.

When he first spoke with deputies, Daniel Kuch told them he'd been the victim of a drive-by shooting while he was jogging Thursday. But detectives said Kuch later acknowledged that he asked a friend to shoot him so he could get some time off work and avoid a drug test.

The friend had been arrested for investigation of reckless endangerment. Kuch was expected to be charged with false reporting.

SOUTH PASADENA, Calif. - This tranquil community on the edge of Los Angeles has become a cursing-free zone.

Under a City Council proclamation approved Wednesday, those who use profanity or make rude gestures could find themselves shamed into better behavior by the unsettling glances of South Pasedena residents who take their reputation for civility seriously.

"That's one of the purposes of this," Mayor Michael Cacciotti said of his city's proclamation designating the first week of March as No Cussing Week. "It provides us a reminder to be more civil, to elevate the level of discourse."

Other odd (and sad) news

A letter, unstamped, sent "   Paradise street, the Sky " to a dead mom returned taxed by post, in the big confusion of an inconsolable girl, tells the Newspaper of Saône-et-Loire in its Thursday's edition .

For the second anniversary of the death of her mother, Anaïs ( 13 years), inconsolable since, had decided to send " a message of love as a bottle in the sea " to this mom who she  missed so much.

The girl had posted then symbolically a letter in a municipality of Chatillonais, with the name and the first name of her mother and as address,
" Paradise street, the Sky ";without franking it .

Two days later her mail returned to her with the mention " do not live in the indicated address " and a 1,35-euro " tax "  was demanded by the civil servant. For its defence, the Post office clarified to the newspaper that the municipality of "ciel"(Sky)exists  in Saône-et-Loire but what " Paradise street is there unknown ".

Another odd news:

You probably know that Belgium got a big issue/war about walloon and Dutch speaking population.

Now our Dutch folks have decided this:

In this Flemish municipality near Brussels, we speak and we write in Dutch and only in Dutch.

After French, it is English which is henceforth in the line of sight. Posters and the other written inscriptions are banished.

An agency (century21 type)  experienced it by receiving a letter of the municipality reminding it the exclusive usage of Dutch in its communication.

Its mistake? Have put a panel " For Sale " next to the panel " Te Koop " in front of a house which she put on sale.

An Internet user sent us this particularly polite and clear letter of which here is the translation:

" We have noticed that your advertising boards " to sell " are also drafted in English.

" As this municipality belongs to the Flemish region and has no facilities for the speakers of another language, it is important that you use exclusively Dutch in all your communications. You will be so pleasant to your Dutch-speaking customers and you give to your customers speakers of the other languages which learn Dutch  The occasion to practise our language. The city council , the mayor and the aldermen pays a particular attention on the   dutch speaking character  of Overijse. In our living environment it is essential that all respect the sense of identity of the region.

" We thus hope that your company will contribute in the future in a positive way to the conservation of the Flemish character of this municipality. We would like to know of what you think of this problem .And we thank you beforehand for a fast answer. With our best consideration. In the name of  mayor, his council and the aldermen.

The banning death one seems to be a way to get the court to see sense. Either they let them have a graveyard or the court has to figure out what to do with the bodies. I bet if they start sending hearses to the judge's house, he'll reverse his ruling immediately.

Heh.  That's a good one.. selling your grave plot to avoid the death penalty.

Still, now it's even more illegal to (or attempt to) murder someone else, or attempt suicide.  :P

At least this measure doesn't involve a gulliotene, right? :P

I just realized that I have no idea how to spell that word.
