Bankruptcy makes gift cards worthless
By ANNE D'INNOCENZIO, AP Business WriterMon Mar 3, 6:00 PM ET

You know that Sharper Image gift card you got for Christmas? Right now, it's worthless. And other gift cards in your wallet could lose their value, too.

As more retailers file for bankruptcy or go out of business, more than $75 million in gift cards are at risk of becoming worthless pieces of plastic this year.

Crazy stuff, considering the gift card is already paid for....

No kidding, eh?!

My thought is, if it's a trend for struggling companies to not honor purchased gift cards, well that's just crap in my opinion.  If a company already received payment for merchandise, they should honor it by, you know, actually giving you the merchandise!  Funny, that.  [8D]

Didn't even know Sharper Image had gift cards. [sm=confused.gif]

LOL I think everyone sells gift cards now.    They just don't honor them!

Emperor1956 -> RE: Sharper Image Gift Cards - Worthless? (3/4/2008 1:30:38 PM)

ownedgirlie:  That TSI would not honor prepaid gift cards is no shock.  The company's entire history is all blow, no show.  From the first ads Thalmaier took out in airline magazines to sell overpriced trinkets to frequent fliers, TSI was the "cool tech store of last resort".   I agree it is shameful.  I fully expect, however, that some enterprising Attorney General is looking at it as I type.

Luckily i used mine, though i can't really see barnes and noble going out of business and filing for bankruptcy, especially after they opened a few more new stores.  [8|]

thank god i never buy them crap things...i mean whats the point anyway??? your not getting any deals.... your just paying up front for a piece of plastic.

why not just put that money away? or give cash as a gift instead of some piece of plastic??? cash is much more beautiful to look at when taken out of a gift box!!!! than a stupid piece of plastic!!!! and you can use the cash any where and any how you want!

Emperor1956 -> RE: Sharper Image Gift Cards - Worthless? (3/4/2008 1:39:18 PM)

faeryT'dgirl:  you are absolutely correct.  The entire "gift card" industry is a scam.  First, you are paying for future services with your hard-earned present dollars.  Like Starbucks or Best Buy NEEDS your $50 advance payment?   Second, you are putting your money at risk -- Bankruptcy, loss of the card (had a $100 Gift card stolen out of my wallet last month...GRRRRR...had it been money, I don't think I'd have been carrying it there).

Last Christmas, my partner rolled in with a couple of grand in cash and said "lets go to the bank and buy Visa gift cards for the office staff".  I said "NO, lets take the dough, buy some nice inexpensive cards, and I'll write a note to each employee with a thank you and tuck in the bill."  He was blown away...actually THANK the people that work for us?  And our employees were blown away with a small additional cash bonus.  I think gift cards would have diminished it.

In California, any "cash gift" over....I think it's $50, is taxable.  The company has to report giving it, and the employee has to report receiving it.  After lots & lots of conversations with the VP of Finance where I worked (she thought it was as ludicrous as I did ), we decided gift cards were a great way to "disguise" it.  I would buy them in bulk and keep them locked in my desk.  We had an employee recognition plan and would dole out Visa Gift cards for various achievements.  During the holidays, we'd give out cards for Best Buy, Borders, Home Depot, and other such places.  People liked them.  They thought if they got cash, they'd probably just go out to lunch on it, but to get a store card was fun because they started thinking about what they wanted from that store...

To each their own, of course.  I liked getting Borders cards because I could buy something for myself that I wanted, not needed, and it felt more like a treat. :)

I received a Ruths Chris dinner card for $100.  I love Ruths Chris but it's a rare treat that I go there because of the expense.  But now I have this card, and I'm looking forward to a nice dinner out.  If I had been given $100 cash, I probably would have used it toward paying a bill.  It's a mind-set thing.

What gets me, though, are the gift cards with an expiration date.  That is just so wrong, I can't believe it.  The store has the money, and has spent the money, and if it's over a year later it means the customer probably has to get a less expensive item with the card, due to price increases over time....and they say it's null and void??  Argue this with any manager and you'll get to use your card.

YourhandMyAss -> RE: Sharper Image Gift Cards - Worthless? (3/4/2008 2:36:33 PM)

I agree. My dad was going to get me a reloadable visa debit gift card, and the fee's for it would of eaten up most of the 60 bucks he wanted to give me, so for my birthday he just put the cash in a birthday card and handed it to me Plus there's no plastic thing to throw away which is nicer for the enviroment, unless you collect the cards after.

One scam is to write down the numbers of gift cards, wait a week or so, and then call the company to find out how much money is on it, and order stuff.

p.s.  I have hit a point in my life and my income that I wander around with cash, keep credit cards locked up at home, and give people actual gifts based on what I know of them.  The brain dead aspect of giving gift certificates is obnoxious.

Just a bunch of junk you don't really need.
