All this disquiet over whether Obama is or might be or might have been a Muslim got me wondering as to why it is or might be a problem?

So, I thought I'd survey here - and remember folks its anonymous, as to why, if he is a Muslim or might be or might have been, it presents any problem to him being president?

Is it that "the only good Muslim is a dead Muslim"? or something else?

E, it's one more in a long line of incidents that make me embarrased for the human race. [:)]

Would you elaborate for me?

SouthernLinda -> RE: Obama and Islam (3/3/2008 5:55:19 AM)

Half of them want to kill us, and don't care if they die trying. The other half of them refuse to denounce the half that wants to kill us, which makes them still seem to be happy for us to die. It really is that simple.

kittinSol -> RE: Obama and Islam (3/3/2008 5:56:38 AM)

Ah but no. It's not simple at all, and you are wrong. I'm not ready to give free history and religious lessons, however, so I'll let you bask in your ignorance. Good luck.

SouthernLinda -> RE: Obama and Islam (3/3/2008 6:02:00 AM)

Don't ask the question, if you don't want to hear the answer.

That is truly too simplistic, and incorrect.

kittinSol -> RE: Obama and Islam (3/3/2008 6:07:21 AM)

Au contraire, I wanted to hear your answer; this is why I asked the question. I am glad you answered it, as your initial statement was unclear and ambiguous.

Now that your opinion is out for all to see, we're able to draw our own conclusions about the person who thinks that Muslims should be put to death.

Incidentally, Ellen, I'm not sure it was a good idea to include that option in your poll - I say this with all due respect.

LadyEllen -> RE: Obama and Islam (3/3/2008 6:21:42 AM)

ah but KS - its important that people have the option of saying what they feel

and this isnt really about Obama so much that I'm asking, but about attitudes towards Muslims in general

Personally, and yes I agree this is ignorant thinking, but to me if we elect a muslim to be president its like completely dismissing 9-11.  I know the American attention span is all of about 10 seconds, but if a specific country say Canada was responsible for this attack, and hypthetically we could allow canadians to run for president, do you think we would?  Yes I understand religions and states are different, but its still an unified body of people regardless if they are dispersed around the world or not.  I also know some about muslim and know there are different sects of it as well, but you dont see too many muslims joining any campaign really to stop their own people either.

kittinSol -> RE: Obama and Islam (3/3/2008 6:31:58 AM)

What about the hundreds of thousands of law-abiding, peaceful, Muslim American-born citizens, then? Should they have different rights than others because they're Muslim?

Be careful what you ask for. The terrorists who blew up the World Trade Center were Muslim by name only - their extremism was political, not religious. And you will find that's always the case.

PS: anyway, Obama is NOT a Muslim, so it's a sterile argument.

this is true enough, but then anyone who is Muslim who wishes to stop the extremists is not best served by making public comment, I'd say endangered more than anything - and neither is the attempt to stop the extremists from within served by outing any sources we might have on whats going on?

Makes more logical sense to elect a person based on if you feel they are qualified to do the job and not based upon their personal belief system. The hypothetical issue over a Canadian being allowed to run for president is moot point. Isn't the system set up in a manner that only an american is eligible to enter the presidential race?

lofa -> RE: Obama and Islam (3/3/2008 7:01:39 AM)

35 years of age and a born citizen of The United States Of America to be able to be elected for the office of POTUS, isn't it?
The dead ear can not hear, the slain heart can not come to believe. Christians were charged with the task of spreading the word to the entire world and admonished to be prepared to be reviled, abused and slain in the name of Jesus Christ, ( the death of the flesh no longer mattering to them because the heart had found the redemption that perserved the soul!), not one Christian was originally given the command to slay any other human, for any reason, and where is the love of Christ in terminating the possibility of another finding said LOVE, FORGIVENESS and SALVATION?

kittinSol -> RE: Obama and Islam (3/3/2008 7:05:14 AM)

Wow.

needcruelDom -> RE: Obama and Islam (3/3/2008 7:49:25 AM)

Have nothing against Muslims as individuals. I don't pretend to be an expert in Islam, but I don't think there is something equivalent to Jihad n any other religion.
How did Islam spread from the Arab peninsula to places as far as Malaysia, Indonesia, China to name just a few? Through Jihad (Holly war )
Generalizations are always dangerous, however: Iraq, Syria, Lebanon,  Morroco, Afghanistan, Palestine Authority, Pakistan, Chechniya, Thailand (Muslims in the South), Indonesia, Algeria, Iran , Sudan are all places with less than an examplary record of respect for human rights (read human life ). In fact with the exception of Turkey and Indonesia (just recently) there is no democratic Muslim country in the world ( 2 in about 20 or so..), is it just a coincidence???
All this of course is not directly related to Barak Obama, but can anyone blame those who are suspicious of  Muslims?
A good Muslim is a Muslim that has embraced western humanist values , despite his religion's teachings (meaning in fact being secular)

Where, there is Manifest Destiny, and the White Man's Burden. And if those happen to include killing up the recipients of the message as a way to get the message across, hey, whatever works. How did Christianity manage to spread to the entire world? Is there a country left on this planet where there are no Christians?

Creative, There is another Muslim word that you might find as interesting as you seem to find Jihad. alHair. The current trend to alHair started in Sudan, a predominantly Muslim country. These women are committed to peace. I don't think, in their society structure, they are simply forgoing pleasure. Some of them are probably making their own home lives more miserable than we would care to imagine. If that is not campaigning to stop the violence, you will have to educate me on what would qualify.
